Owen nears Newcastle return, poses key questions
News that Michael Owen could be ready to play for Newcastle as early as the beginning of April is welcome, even if it raises important questions.
For starters, will he be rushed back or rested for next season? He was rushed back by England and Newcastle last season and that ruined everything, literally, for both sides. This year Newcastle are bound to be far more careful but the concern is always going to be there and people will, like in Woodgate’s case, fear that the striker could be too injury-prone to be a good investment.
Secondly, Owen’s return doesn’t solve Newcastle’s defensive woes - but it does give them a quality finisher who could make a big difference to their chances of finishing in the top 6 next season.
Thirdly, it will be interesting to see how McClaren reacts to Owen returning to fitness. Will we see a return of the Rooney / Owen partnership?

Ahmed - I don’t think he will be rushed back this time. Last year was because of the world cup and Owen was very very keen to play in that tournament - and in retrospect he wasn’t ready for it.
It will be interesting to see how he does next season - Newcastle have also given him exercises etc to strengthen his hamstrings - that they did for Dyer.
