No Conspiracy Against Liverpool in Robberies

Footballers are rich guys with a posh lifestyle and often celebrity wives and girlfriends. So they are an advantaged species right, these footballers who earn in one week what many cannot earn in a whole year?

Wrong if you are Steven Gerrard. The Liverpool midfielder might have been roaring in Marseille during his team’s 4-0 demolition of Olymique de Marseille on Tuesday night in the UEFA Champions League but at the same time his home in Merseyside was getting looted. At the time of the robbery at his Formby house, Gerarrd’s wife Alex Curran and their two children were sleeping.

The thieves couldn’t get much though (your definition of ‘much’ may vary). A Rolex watch and two sets of car keys were all that went missing but the ghastly truth that this could happen again and that footballers need more security is cutting deep.

This is of course not the first time that a Liverpool footballer’s home has been burgled. Liverpool striker Dirk Kuyt had his Woolton home burgled just three weeks ago when he was away from England on international duty with the Netherlands national team. Daniel Agger, Peter Crouch and Pepe Reina all had had their homes broken into when they all were away on commitment. Former Liverpool custodian Jerzy Dudek too had once been the unwilling the targets of thieves.

The detectives and police authorities investigating the incident say that they do find a link to all these robberies: all the robberies have occurred when the footballers were away from home playing for their clubs and all these footballers live in the Meseyside region.

Duh! I mean, COME ON! Really?

And before this crops up, reports of a conspiracy – my favourite ones are that A) the robberies are Rafa’s way to take his players’ minds off his rotation policy or B) Manchester United are staging the robberies to pay off their debts – are vastly off the mark 🙂
