Sunderland midfielder Jack Colback will join derby rivals Newcastle United on a free transfer, according to reports from The Guardian.

The 24-year-old was offered around £50,000 a week by West Ham, almost four times the salary he earns at Sunderland, but the midfielder is reluctant to move away from his family from north east.

The other reason and that is the most important one, why he chose the Magpies is, he grew up in North Tyne side and was a boy hood Newcastle United fan.

Gus Poyet is keen to retain the player, but disappointingly his contract was allowed to run down. The modest offer of a new deal that was presented to him by Roberto De Fanti, Sunderland’s former director of football last summer, was not enough in the end to keep him.

The report says it will now take a sensational counter-bid to change the situation in Sunderland’s favour.

Colback’s move to Newcastle will be announced next week, after he returns from honeymoon. Interesting to note is, he will become the first permanent signing for Newcastle for the first team squad in 18 months, and will be the first senior signings made by Newcastle’s new managing director, Lee Charnley.

Newcastle & Sunderland fans, we would love to hear your reactions…
