Newcastle appoint Kinnear as manager

Newcastle have named former Wimbledon and Luton Town manager Joe Kinnear as their interim boss until the end of October, succeeding Kevin Keegan.

Kinnear has been out of work since 2004, which tells you everything you need to know about this appointment (desperate and stop-gap). I don’t see how the likes of Owen and Duff will give Kinnear the due respect if Allardyce couldn’t get it, but at least Newcastle have a manager now.

“I am very excited. Results have not been great of late, but there is a lot of quality in the squad and I am very confident the players are capable of climbing the league table.

Newcastle United is a great club. When I was in charge of Wimbledon I always remember the passion of the fans up there and how great a stadium St James’ Park is.

It is a big challenge but one I am really looking forward to.”

Apparently he’s expected to be in charge for a month or until Newcastle is sold.
