New Middlesbrough Crest

The new Middlesbrough crest has come under serious criticism, but there are some good points to it as well and compared to the old Boro crest (below) it’s definitely an improvement.
The Good - better colors, more space for the lion, and the shield is fine as well.
The Bad - the ribbon at the bottom will (and already has) get the new Middlesbrough crest unfavourable comparisons with public school logos.
Obviously Middlesbrough have put a lot of thought into this and it is definitely an improvement over the old Boro crest, but they can probably do better.

1986 on the old crest and 1976 on the new crest??? confused
Simple - the club was originally founded in 1876. In 1986 the club nearly went bust and a new company was formed to clear the debts and the badge was changed to represent this. The new badge (crest) simply relects that the club was originally formed in 1876 and that the club has a long tradition rather than the misheld view that it was only recently formed.
Looks like a Harry Potter cast off from the Props dept!
Actually that’s unfair as Harry Potter stuff is professionally designed!
Cringeworthy, Boro fans are embarrassed by it. It has completely missed the true history of the club and the pride of the supporters in their Town. Suspect it is the very beginning of the end of the Gibson era with the Boro, sad very Sad.
I think opinion is divided on the new badge - not all fans are embarrassed by it. I think a lot don’t like it but not all by any means.
dont u mean the new 1 looks like a private school logo? not public
There has been quite a bit of knee-jerk criticism of the new badge. However a lot of people i know have said it has grown on them after initial misgivings.
All in all a nice logo, but I agree that the ribbon’s too much
Like it - it looks more modern to me.
I think the old one was far nicer.
And the ‘public’ vs ‘private’ school issue is more complex - in that the VERY old schools, who have such logos, were once public, but many are now private…
wats da dates about on the crests dats how u no dat middlesborough confused
it is a good crest i like it its better than the old 1
the last bagde looks like something off a old beer bottle an the new one is a great improvement with more space for the lion, it does not look as cramped. but with this space i feel that there is no need 2 go so far away from the chrest with the ribbon an makes it look some what sepparated from the crest. but over all its an improvement and middlesbrough fans should be proud
Its a nice badge, but its a bit of a bastard when you already have the old one tatooed on your back
boro trying to be classy, when there is no class in middlesborough
Private schools in the UK are called Public Schools, whilst ‘Public’ Schools are called states schools. Can often be confusing for obvious reasons
i like da new badge it looks good but it may be to posh for boro
awesome crest! definitely better than the old one and a definite improvement for boro. Hope they achieve more under this crest. And remember all those people that think boro is unposh, they reached last years UEFA Cup final against Sevilla.
Sam,
A public school in england is a private school.
I like the new crest except for the flowery text area that makes it look more like a family coat of arms rather than a football club crest.
The crest is growing on me but the typography is poor…
as for there being no class in Middlesbrough bryan you fail to say where you are from…all I can say I’d rather come from Boro than seven sisters, east ham, woolwich, shepherds bush i could go on.
“the last bagde looks like something off a old beer bottle an the new one is a great improvement with more space for the lion, it does not look as cramped.”
Haha
Yes because he needs room to move about and eat his lion food and play with other lions. I dont know if anyone has told you this but the lion isnt real
its a bit nicer but theres history wif the old one
didnt catch that 1886 and 1986 though
it looks more traditional!
Initial thoughts were Scotland badge
@ tim-spurs: There’s supposed to be history with the new one. I personally dislike it.
When it was first published, did not like it like many boro fans, but certainly grows on you, think it is a nice badge. UP THE BORO!
Having disliked the badge at first it is starting to grow on me now helped by the fact it is a better PC/Mobile wallpaper than the old crest. Still preferred the circular shape rather than the shield, made it look more compact.
I was the graphic designer who designed the old logo in 1986 working for Peter Cook at CPR publishing, who was then a director of the football club.I stated at the time before I designed it that the date should run from when the club formed 1876. But the brief was to design from 1986.
I am surprised the logo lasted as long as it did, however having said that because I designed it in a cicle representing a football, the shape still looks modern today in my opinion, because cicles do not date. Also the shape lends itself better for publishing etc. The only aspect I like about the new logo is that the date is correct 1876.
I like the new crest.
I think it was needed to be honest, although it’s just a manager change, it feels like a new era is being ushered in at Middlesbrough & what better way to signify that than to change your crest? Especially after the shit and boring image that McClaren gave us.
Changing of logo’s or crests is always an indication that there needs to be change in the organization. I like it, I think it is more up to date than the previous crest, and it will lead to more marketing and promotions. Don’t be too shocked if other clubs start to rethink their crest.
If my memory serves me right the club actually did go bust and a new club was formed called Middlesbrough Football Club 1986 Ltd, hence the use of the 1986 in the logo. If that’s the case I’d like to know how they’ve managed to drop it and add the original club’s date of birth.
The orignal Middlesbrough FC never actually went bust Simon. We were saved with about 10 minutes to spare.
The decision to put 1986 on the badge in the first place was Gibson’s, to represent that we were entering a new era, going from near death to revival. We were allowed to put our formation date on it because, well, thats when we were formed.
I like it. The old one was a bit crap IMO. And at least we didn’t go down the same road as Villa in designing a badge - now that IS awful.
