Great article. Villa had a chance to break in, but i think they have blown it. Arsenal are just getting there players back. I like Villa, but they dnt deserve it. The reasons being 1) CSKA Moscow away - enough said! 2) The fans attitude when drew with stoke (and booing agbonlahor) - u worse than chelsea fans.

Villa need to concentrate on the english league and get some consistency going. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see Villa in europe but I'd prefer to see a few seasons of top 5's first

PS - Good choice to cover Villa, definitley the seasons over-achievers, pity they don't look likely to see it through and break the monotony of the 'big 4'

Some good points, Luke.

I don't suppose Villa started off this season thinking of the top 4, but of the top 6. If they'd done, say, 6 points worse than they had done by the time they got to the CSKA games, they'd have gone at those with a full squad most likely.

Villa may well finish 5th this year, and that's a good season. It's just that it will come with a taste of what might have been. It's the same principle that governs you feeling worse about conceding second in a 1-1 draw than scoring the equaliser - same result, just losing a lead tinges the result with disappointment.

I think we need new blood in the Champions League. Already next year will debut a completely new format that will field more teams from smaller countries, and in Germany teams like Hertha Berlin, Hoffenheim, and Wolfburg are flying high. Genoa are 4th in Italy, and Braga have a shot at 3rd in Portugal. Malaga have a chance of qualifying in Spain. A Champions league with Aston Villa, Hoffenheim, Wolfsburg, Hertha Berlin, Braga, and Genoa would be wonderfully refreshing and, I believe, exciting.
