Mourinho dumps Mata but keeps faith in Torres

It seems like Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho is still keeping faith on former Liverpool striker Fernando Torres, but has urged the Spaniard to adjust quickly to his systems.

Torres

The 29-year-old has yet to score a goal for the Blues this season but Mourinho is still backing his striker to deliver . Of course, he needs to, as he has very little options left with him regarding the choice of strikers. Chelsea have tried all summer to land a top striker but at best they could get was Cameroon international Samuel Eto’o, who many think has passed his prime.

The Portuguese says he will try to bring the best out of the player for whom Roman Abramovich shelled out £50m in 2011 January transfer window. But, in order to tick all the boxes, Torres must need to adapt to Jose’s system at Chelsea.

The Portuguese said as quoted in the Daily Mail:

“Liverpool was more running into spaces and the way here is more ball at his feet with small spaces to play in. Fernando is not naturally a skilful, creative player but he is a good player, a good professional and it was a good surprise for me the way he works very hard. I believe in Fernando.”

While Jose continues to keep the faith on Torres, it seems strange to many that how ruthlessly he has given cold shoulders to Spanish duo Juan Mata and Cesar Azpilicueta.

Mata was arguably the best player of Chelsea last season but Mourinho has clearly stated that the Spaniard needs to adapt to his system as he sees Oscar as the primary no 10 for his side. Likewise, right-back Azpilicueta has been largely neglected too as the Spaniard has yet to start in the league so far.

Can Mourinho rejuvenate the Old-Torres of Liverpool?

Tough. Rather very tough. Torres’ game was entirely based on pace. It is the menacing pace of his that troubled so many top defenders in the Premier League and in Europe including the likes of Nemanja Vidic.

Now, at his age, he has lost that extra yard of pace (career blighted with injuries) and probably that’s why we don’t see him getting past the last defender by sheer pace anymore these days. Plus, at Chelsea, he tries to compensate that loss of pace with more interchange of passes and clever movements, which unfortunately are not his prime weapons.
