Chris:

Last year, I interviewed Mr. Ian Blanchard, Head of National Referee Development at the FA, for Soccerlens. Here was his opinion about additional referees/assistants:

"I am not supportive of additional referees or assistants in order to control a game. Can you imagine the uproar if one referee gives a foul and cautions as opposed to the other referee in the other half just giving a foul?

In my opinion this would breed inconsistence and confusion. The same can be said for assistant referees. In one half you may have a very competent official whereas in the other half the assistant is not so good."

The 2 additional linesmen doesn't work. Every british coach in the Europa league said it didn't work. Either the 2 additional linesmen missed the decisions they should of made or simply just never made a decision.
I feel in the MLS (although I'm no expert) is that the Ref's just need better training, they probably need to spend a greater time studying and understanding the top ref's in the world, only doing this will improve the refereeing standard, not just simply adding more linesmen to games.

I been to every Chicago Fire home game this year. MLS referees are terrible. Worse yet than lacking focus and bad calls, some of the refs seem to not know all of the rules. It is shameful. If the MLS wants to be considered the 5th major sport in North America, this situation must be corrected.
