Kartik,

What a difference a game makes! New York just proved everything you said and Seattle just disproved it. Water seeks it's own level, and the clubs with the best management are going to keep pace with Seattle.

Try to forget about New York like a bad dream.

This is a league that IFFHS ranked 77th in the world, and has been shown up by its own second division, USL in the only meaningful international competition it participates in. I support MLS, and blog about it almost every day, but the league has some serious issues on the pitch. The finances and marketing may be outstanding but the quality of football is worse than it was 10 years ago and rapid expansion isn't helping the cause. The salary cap and disbanding of the reserve league have all benefited USL making it less and less surprising that USL aka 2nd division teams are having an easier time competiting in continental football.

MLS may think things are rosy now but as Americans begin to understand and appreciate the football world more, the product better improve it will face some serious problems. The poor TV ratings for MLS when compared with the Premier League, FMF and UEFA Champions League already reflect that the more sophisticated football fan is tuning the league out. USL's success in CONCACAF has just furthered the opinion that MLS is a subpar league even by American standards.
