But here in the United States they play soccer in the schools and then college and they are 20 or 21 years old and they are coming to me, having been coached straight out of a book. None of these coaches has played at any kind of high level.

Few question why the recent crop of US National team managers (Steve Samspon, Bruce Arena, and now Bob Bradley) have never played at any significant professional level. Gullit is new on the horizon yet he stated something that needed to be said.

For me, the next step is for an American international to manage the national team. In recent history, only one US National team manager had a cap: Bruce Arena in 1973 against Israel. Motivation and man management are not enough. You need someone who has played at the highest levels as is the case in the rest of the world.

I keep getting the impression that MLS doesn't want to take the necessary steps to be recognized as a league to work for. It'd rather have the flashy things other major leagues from around the world have, but not the fundamentals and not train for world-class football.
