Should Sheva return to Milan?

Written by Andrei

Adriano Galliani has revealed today that AC Milan will make a move for former striker Andriy Shevchenko should Chelsea make the Ukrainian available, says Goal.com. Shevchenko was at AC Milan during the peak of his career between 1999 and 2006. Then he moved to Chelsea for a reported transfer fee of £30 million, but he has looked out of shape at the London club and he will look to leave in order to rejuvenate his career.

Last week, the Daily Mail revealed that Shevchenko was turned down by several MLS clubs which he was keen on joining. This was considered something of an embarrassment for the Ukrainian who many thought was rejected by one of the easiest leagues in football.

Now the Chelsea board could wait until they hire their next manager before deciding on the future of Shevchenko as they will want to discuss the situation with the him, whoever he turns out to be. So far the Ukrainian’s spell at Stamford Bridge has been a nightmare, and he might like returning to a land where he was once god.

  1. Ya know, I don’t believe that MLS bit for a second… although with his current public image no one in the US will pay his wages…

  2. I can’t think of where he’d fit in MLS. New York have the extra ‘Beckham rule’ slot, but they’ve already got Angel/Altidore up top. LA have no room for him. DC United, Columbus, Kansas City, and Chicago have all used their Beckham rule (though DC have also acquired Colorado’s). Maybe Toronto? Although they hardly need a box-office attraction.

Anyway, the more successful teams are using young US players, or raiding Latin America (or Africa, as Steve Nicol has begun doing in New England). For the most part, we’re turning away from European players, except those that can fit a role and come cheaply (we now have almost as many players from Argentina as from all of Europe; and of the 21 non-North-American players who signed between the MLS championship game and the start of the season, 18 were Latin Americans).

It’s more likely that Martin Palermo will come here than Sheva. The Latin Americans actually give a damn, unlike most of the high-priced Europeans that have come here.

  3. I don’t believe that no team in the MLS want him. Highly unlikely. Beckham is good and is a star in the MLS. Shevchenko is much better then Beckham was and will ever be. So, I don’t think he will have a problem. Also, he is the 3rd highest goal scorer in Champions League history and oh ya, Footballer of the year (ballon d’or) in ‘04.
