‘Mignolet worse than Dracula’ – Liverpool great Grobbelaar

Five observations

Former Liverpool great Bruce Grobbelaar has says Simon Mignolet is “worse than Dracula”, criticizing the goalkeeper for his poor form this season.

Speaking to the BBC, Grobbelaar was scathing in his assessment of the Belgium international, who has endured a difficult campaign.

His error against Ludogorets allowed the Bulgarian team to open the scoring in their UEFA Champions League clash in midweek, as Liverpool only managed a 2-2 draw.

“He doesn’t command his area,” Grobbelaar said. “I’ve likened Mignolet to worse than Dracula because at least Dracula comes out of his coffin now and then.

“He seems to stay on his line and that’s it. That whole area, not just the six-yard area, is the goalkeeper’s.

“In this day and age, in modern goalkeeping, if you come out and you catch the ball and you get smacked, you’re going to get the foul. It’s not rocket science.”

It marks a difficult week for Mignolet, who joined Liverpool from Sunderland last season and was a key part of Brendan Rodgers’ side as they narrowly missed out on winning the English Premier League.

But Rodgers himself has criticized Mignolet after his performance in Bulgaria, with the ‘keeper in danger of being dropped if his form doesn’t improve.

“As a goalkeeper you have to be able to let these things go,” said Rodgers of Mignolet’s error.

“The goal was a massive setback for the team but we need to keep his confidence as high as we can. We have to look to the weekend and keep a clean sheet.”
