Manchester City star makes stunning Manchester United admission

Micah Richards

Manchester City defender Micah Richards has made the stunning revelation he nearly joined Manchester United while he was playing for the Etihad outfit – but spurned the opportunity.

The former England full-back, now on loan at Fiorentina after becoming an outcast at the club where he came through the ranks, believes he would now be captain had the club not had massive investment.

“If we didn’t get the investment we did, I’d probably be captain now,” Richards told the Daily Telegraph.

“I probably wouldn’t have left. I had a chance to go to Chelsea five years ago, and Manchester United.

“I always enjoyed City. They gave me a chance at such a young age. It was emotional because I was at City for a long time, but some day I’ll be back there in some capacity, maybe not coaching, I’d like to scout players.”

Richards, whose contract with City expires in the summer, steps foot back on English soil tonight as Fiorentina take on Tottenham in the Europa League.

But will he be back in the Premier League on a permanent basis next season? If he is, then it will almost certainly not be with City. It will be interesting to see how he performs at White Hart Lane later and if he has cut out those notorious lapses in concentration.
