Micah Richards available for £8m in the summer – should Liverpool go for him?

Many of the impressive elements of Liverpool’s season have very much been about the front end of the squad, rather than the defence. Whilst Suarez, Sturridge et al have plundered goals aplenty, the defence has looked somewhat less than totally secure. The last couple of games where Kolo Toure has blundered are good examples. Reports suggest however that Brendan Rodgers has earmarked Manchester City’s Micah Richards as at least one way of strengthening his back line.

Reports in The Sun suggest that an £8million bid for the player is on the cars for the summer. Given the restricted first team opportunities coming Richards’ way at the Etihad, it may well be an option he’d want to take advantage of. For a player that a few years ago appeared to be on the verge of establishing himself as a regular player for the Three Lions, Richards’ career has been stalled, if not put into reverse by a few injuries and others being in front of him in the queue for a starting berth in the City team. Sometimes, a change of club can be the very thing required to raise a player’s aspirations and project his career forward again. Richards remains a player of untapped potential and Rodgers clearly feels he can deliver on that.

Whether City would be prepared to sell the player to a growing rival is another question entirely. It’s certainly true that the Eastlands club are not in need of the money, and would probably not be enthusiastic about assisting Rodgers to build a team that can challenge City’s aspirations. Collecting players and placing them in the reserves however cannot be a long term plan and if City don’t rate the player, they may be prepared to take thew money and move him on to create space in the squad for another player.

Football is a game of passions and opinions. If you’re a fan, it’s both your boon and your bane; the drug that you simply cannot live without. Your team will break your heart, make you despair and swear that you’ll give them up. Like some lovestruck fool ensnared by a femme fatale however, you’ll be back again next week. You know it. They know it. Just accept it and embrace it. The lows are bad, but oh, those highs….. Now in my sixth decade, I’ve been a football fan for over fifty years and a Chelsea fan for every one of them. I hold FA Coaching badges and have been a member of the FA Coaches Association for over 15 years, working with numerous teams of varying age and ability levels; it’s the next best thing to playing. That said, I still regularly don the guise of the ‘Panther’, and keep goal for our company team. I’ve written a number of articles focusing on Spanish Football for a different website, and welcome this opportunity to “call it as I see it, without fear or favour” about our game. As I said, football is a game of passions and opinions, so agree or disagree with what I write as you see fit, I’ll passionately tell you my opinion, you tell me yours.
