Adidas have revealed their official World Cup advert, ‘Messi’s World Cup Dream’, with the Argentine captain joined by a host of international stars, including Brazil’s Dani Alves, Uruguay’s Luis Suarez, and Germany’s Mesut Ozil in bringing the passion of the World Cup to the small screen.

Fernando Meirelles and Messi

The advert, which features an exclusive track from Kanye West, was directed by City of God’s Fernando Meirelles.

Encapsulating the Adidas ‘all or nothing’ campaign, the advert shows that if you want to lift the World Cup trophy, there’s only one way, to live and play, with Messi et al personifying the passion associated with the greatest footballing tournament on the planet.

The audience follows the various football stars as they prepare for the World Cup, through shooting practice, to gym work, and even sleep, which incidentally is where we find Argentine captain Leo Messi. The action soon heads to the pitch where, spurred on by Kanye West’s new dramatic track, the likes of Robin van Persie, Xavi and of course Messi, enter into battle for the most coveted prize in the sport.

Directer Meirelles, who has also directed the film ‘The Constant Gardner’, said that stepping into the world of football for the first time was a truly unique experience:

‘It was like being on a roller coaster – quite an experience. Coming from the world of movies, it was exciting to step into this whole new world of football. We had to be prepared to do anything at any time which meant stepping out of my comfort zone, but it was certainly a great experience testing myself with an exciting new challenge.’

The advert will be beamed around the world at half time during tonight’s Champions League Final between Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid.
