Football fans always love to compare between great players. Why only football? It applies to sports in general. Be it Sachin Tendulkar vs Brain Lara in cricket, Roger Federer vs Rafael Nadal in tennis or may be Muhammad Ali vs Joe Frazier in boxing, fans always love to compare between the greats.

The same applies for Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, arguably the two greatest footballers of modern era. Both are extremely talented. Both are highly successful. And the fact, they play for Barcelona and Real Madrid, two of the biggest sporting rival institutions, make this rivalry all the more fascinating.

Messi is not perturbed (I’m sure the same applies for Ronaldo as well) with the hype about this rivalry. He feels that the media always look for such things, but in reality there is no rivalry between him and Ronaldo. He says that he doesn’t compare himself with Ronaldo, or with any other player. He is only focussed on bettering his own performance and doing the best for the team.

“The press looks comparisons and all this sort of thing. The only thing I want is to help my team grow each season. I do not compare myself with either Cristiano or anyone else. Just try to think of myself and my teammates and get the games forward,” Messi said in an interview with the Egyptian MBC chain.

Ahead of El Clasico next week, Messi says that Real Madrid are a great footballing side and one of the best teams in the world. He says that Los Blanocs are a tough opponent to beat, and it is always difficult to win the league title with them around.
