Can Arsenal and Manchester United avoid the fate of Chelsea and Liverpool?

Can Arsenal and Manchester United avoid the fate of Chelsea and Liverpool?

It’s times like these that European football makes me glad. We were reminded yesterday in stark fashion that the Premier League, for all its’ self-primping as the ‘best league in the world’, is hardly as ‘great’ as us followers of the English media are led to believe.

Mind you, I know that one night (or one match) is not any reflection of a whole season, but I ask you – how would the Premier League’s Big Four (Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool) fare in a European Super League? I’d wager that an English club would definitely be in the top 3, but I wouldn’t go so far as to bet that an English club would win it. They’re not that far ahead (if indeed they are ahead) – in this prick-waving contest that the media engages in, remember that the camera adds two inches to it.

On to the matches then – first a look at yesterday’s two games and then on to tonight’s games, along with some predictions. For the record (because people always seem to question this), I was watching the Porto-Liverpool game until I realised at half-time that Chelsea were 0-1, so switched over to watch the rest of the Chelsea-Rosenborg game. There, now you know my ‘T- watching credentials’.

Chelsea 1-1 Rosenborg

I was impressed with the effort Rosenborg put in and equally impressed (I’m easily impressed, apparently) with Chelsea’s wave after wave of attack. Last season we saw Arsenal create plenty of chances and fail to win (and the year before that, lest anyone forget, it was Manchester United doing this) and as it has been in the last two years (and before that), you may create the most chances but if you’re not putting them away there can’t be any excuses for losing, nor can you claim that “but we created so many chances” as evidence of being ‘the better team’.

Chelsea are missing Lampard and Drogba badly, but this was a game that they should have won while resting those two and John Terry as well. They’ve been playing at an exceptionally high level for so long that it’s rare to see them slip and when they do so, somehow the criticism is far greater than usual. I don’t think (at least not from the second half performance) that Chelsea played poorly – it’s just that with Shevchenko not match fit (and behind all other strikers in the pecking order) he wasn’t the man to score a second and Kalou is still a few years away from pulling Drogbas.

This was the easiest game of the group, but on the positive side Chelsea still can’t be beaten at home and they’ll go to Valencia in a fortnight looking for a major improvement on this (and hopefully will have their key players back for that game). I’d back Chelsea to win if they have their players fit, but on the other hand Valencia would have learned their lesson from last season and won’t allow Chelsea to get back into the game like they did last time.

Porto 1-1 Liverpool

A tougher game than Chelsea’s, and when people criticise Liverpool for this they forget that Porto are a decent side and quite good at home in Europe. Liverpool struggled not because they played particularly bad, but because Porto were better than some thought they would be and some of the Liverpool players had a pretty average game.

It must be frustrating for Rafa to see this game – it was exactly this type of performance that he has worked so hard to eliminate from the Liverpool squad over the summer. Seeing how easy it was for Liverpool to get their goal (or was it Kuyt’s exquisite movement that made it deceptively simple?), they really should have scored more. In the first half I wasn’t happy with Pennant’s performance (and the early defending made it hard enough) and he should have been hauled off at half time and replaced.

It hardly time to panic though – Liverpool took a point from a difficult away game and considering that the other two teams in their group are Marseille and Besiktas, they should look at this as a positive result. The next 5 games of the group will be easier, and from what we saw yesterday, they have it in them to win all 5.

Arsenal vs Sevilla

Arsenal have been, defensive frailties apart, irresistible this season. They can still be outdone by a technically sound and talented squad (which Sevilla are), but have nothing to fear and the win over Tottenham on the weekend (as well as the goals Fab and Ade scored) will give Arsenal plenty of confidence and momentum. I expect Arsenal to set a high tempo early in the game, and start pretty much like they did in the Carling Cup final against Chelsea last season (except that this season this squad has the ability to continue for 90 minutes and not fade out).

Sevilla have won the Uefa Cup in consecutive seasons and as a result you might say that they have European experience, but consider this: this is the first time that Sevilla are playing in the Champions League, and regardless of how good Juande Ramos is it will count against Sevilla on the pitch when its crunch time.

But Sevilla aren’t here just to make up the numbers – they have an excellent squad (Dani Alves is still there, remember – this will be another chance to see him in action) and unlike Arsenal’s weekend opponents, are technically disciplined and professional to boot.

It promises to be ‘THE’ tie of Matchday 1 – let’s hope neither team disappoints.

Sporting Lisbon vs Manchester United

Carlos Querioz promised that Manchester United would be ‘respectful but ambitious’, a statement that leaves a sour taste in my mouth. Why must Manchester United be respectful first and ambitious later? Why are we going over to Sporting and securing that 1 point first, and then going for the other 2?

I understand the situation – it’s a tough away game, our priority is to qualify from the group and get to the 2nd round and not go down with all guns blazing. However, just once, just once, I would want Ferguson and Queiroz to put out a side that plays genuinely attacking football and takes the game to the home side BEFORE they’re a goal down.

I’m all for covering our asses and being defensively solid but there have been so many times that we’ve allowed the home side to dictate the game and get ahead and then woken up after that. For once, let’s take the game to them.

Manchester United’s injuries and poor form points to a far more cautious approach, and it’ll be interesting to see how Manchester United line up and especially, who starts up front (as this will be a 4-5-1).

Predictions

I’m going for wins here – both for Arsenal and for Manchester United (and I expect both to be scrappy). What about you guys?

Man united will play terrible as usual and score one flukey set piece goal… but according the pundits: that’s what champions are all about.

Play terrible football and still fluke a win…

    Yeah right…

wave after wave of chelski attack?!?! what game where you watching? I was there (prawn sandwich seats) and bored senseless (not just my evilArse bias – the chelski boys around me where equally critical). Chavs where very very poor – Sheva is basically shot and with Ballack crocked there’s no replacement for Fat Franky. (Although the German is far less popular than Sheva who apparently is trying)

Drogs listened to his Ipod throughout and left a few minutes before the end of 90. Saw FatFranky on the way to the loo’s looking rather pale and peaky.

Unbelievably dull game – although a stunning Rosenborg fan cheered us up after the match with a bit of banter.

helleo…..mr Franny Jeffers or funny jefferes because u make me laugh. i thought for a bit u r franky jeffers because i thought u were talking about chelsea cuz ur comments reflect chelsea’s style of play. they can hold on for a 1-0 win. united aren’t like that and they proved that last season.

minhaj… chelsea were always like that. But now its ManUre’s style. Check the last few games they played.

yes mr franny jeff… you have at last said something that make a bit of foolish sence. manu playing lackluster football for the time being cuz they have injuries and suspension to their best two players. at the moment they’re digging results out and to be successful a team sometimes have dig results out. this will change soon. i hope i’ll get the chance again to chat with you in a few week time when united will start play like they play.

Manchester United will have a bumpy ride in Lisbon. Sporting is quite good at home. But i hope Ronaldo, Rooney and Tevez can do something to unlock lisbon’s defence! Go go man utd!

Wow i must admit after watching last nights game i thought Liverpool would get a kicking on Soccerlens as they were really very poor for most of the game. I’d agree with the author that Pennant should have been taken off, the funny thing is that we actually started to play better after he was sent off!

The one positive i can take from the game is that even though Porto dominated possession, they very rarely threatened to get a second goal.

i think the lesson both arsenal and man u had best take from yesterdays matches is simple: no one is handing the premier league teams 3 points. it seemed that porto came out blazing, and liverpool was always reacting, while rosenborg played like a team that had nothing to lose, as no one expected them to even be competitive, including chelsea.
i agree with ahmeds point that it would be nice to see teams go for the win the whole way through, not just try to guarantee the away point and count on home 3s…the competition isnt standing still, and the english teams now need to work to back up the hype, they are among the best in tournament, and its time to prove it by beating their opponents, not by merely surviving through to the next round.

my question, can rangers hope for a better result than celtic got?

I think Manchester will win 1-0 because they still haven’t gotten their real form yet and still need time to do so. (I look at 1-0 as a bad thing. I’m too used to seeing Man U winning 3-0 even though they never do well in UCL)

Arsenal will probably win by 2 goal difference because they have been playing really well and showed that they can comeback in the second half when trailing behind a point. (Tottenham) Also, it is a home game so I’m expecting Arsenal to win no matter what happens.

btw i can’t believe Chelsea tied to Rosenborg in their home game. That’s just sad. But I agree with Ahmed conclusion on Liverpool vs Porto. Liverpool will beat Porto in their home game.

Well done to porto Liverpool never looked urgent to get forward and were quite happy with a point. We won at the nou camp we and the other top english clubs should go for a win home and away i think the english clubs have gotten really better and maybe soon the top 3 ranked europe sqauds AC Milan, Barca, Liverpool could be all english :)

Chelsea omg were oh were is shadow? This was a really poor chelsea team i predicted a 6 or 7 nil for this match….. looks like Man Utd are going to have it easy on the weekend?

Thought Liverpool were very poor. The team lacked cohesion because of the excessive changes. Lots of players off colour. Only player to come out with some credit was Kuyt I thought. Hyypia and not Reina was a at fault for the first goal. His lack of pace caught up with him and the writing was on the wall. Only today has it come out in the Press that Agger had a foot injury, and yet he was fit enough to start on the bench.

Having said all of that, unlike the blinkered Liverpool fans, the team should be relieved that they came away with a point from a notoriously difficult ground. Given the circumstances in the match the fact that Liverpool drew will make the point garnered much more valuable than it seems.

Pennant was petulant but I still think he’s been one of Liverpool’s better players this season. It might be that because of Mclaren’s refusal to call him up, the player might feel that “what’s the point” in consistently performing when hes only going to be overlooked. Let’s hope not because he’ll only be doing the Liverpool fans, and most importantly himself, a disservice.

Pennant made a mess of things. Even the normally calm Rafa said that they were thinking of replacing him when the referee sent him out. If his attitude is going to be based on him being overlooked for the national team, then all I can say is that some guys never learn. He’s extremely lucky to be playing for a club like Liverpool after his antics at Arsenal and should be grateful to Rafa and should show it in his playing……….

    United start with:

    EVDS
    Brown, Rio, Vidic, Evra
    Ronaldo, Carrick, Scholes, Nani
    Giggs
    Rooney

Surprised, a bit, but I feel that Saha and Tevez are getting the time to be at full strength for the Chelsea game.

9 goals from their last 3 games. Say what you want about the quality of the opposition but i doubt Man Utd or Chelsea would have gotten such results. In fact i do remember Man Utd scraping by with just 1 goal against Spurs not too long ago! ;)

I still want to see RVP scoring in the Premiership. A player of his quality cannot go so long without scoring goals in that competition. I don’t know if its a confidence thing or what, but he needs to turn into the match winner we will soon need against the tougher teams in the EPL & the CL. So far Fabregas has been that man but RVP needs to step up too.

My biggest worry is always gonna be the defence now. Looking at it its still way too shaky. Sagna & Clichy are fantastic but Toure is all by himself in the centre without any stable partner backing him up, & we still have no decent back-up plan in event of injuries . Despite having done well i’m still not sure of Almunia. Can he be consistent for a whole season? Still a lot of gambles to make & a lot of choices up in the air. That’s exactly what worries me & keeps me awake at night!

I was at the Emirates on wednesday night and the only thing that makes our defence look shaky is when Senderos plays! He worries me whenever the ball comes his way. Thank god Gallas is back soon. Great performance by the lads the other night by the way. A lot of teams will struggle against Sevilla in europe but we looked comfortable all night.

    September 21st, 2007 @ 15:52

Paul – I agree with you about Senderos but i have noticed that a lot of the times when Toure & Senderos are playing together, Senderos is better at holding the offside trap than Toure is. Toure’s been caught out quite a few times tracking back too early. I don’t know what’s going on there. Maybe he feels that Senderos isn’t capable on his own or something (wonder why?).

Gallas coming back is good news, but he’s not without his defensive blunders either. I’m starting to feel that Toure always has a thought in the back of his head that he’s always got to back up his partner as well as make attacking runs down the middle like he’s been told to do by Wenger. At this rate i think his nerves are gonna get frazzled if Gallas/Senderos don’t start improving fast & then we’ll have 2 uncertain CB’s in the line instead of just the one. If that wasn’t enough the uncertainty about the quality of our goalkeeping must be weighing on Toure’s mind as well. Remember the Spurs match on the weekend? Almunia had a decent game until he came out of his box waaaay to early to face off one on one against Berbatov & it was only coz Toure was back tracking early that he caught Berbatov with a great tackle.

Its shit like this that’s gonna make Toure really over-worked & nerve-wracked & that’s no way for a Defender to be.

I don’t know about you guys, but during the Sevilla game i noticed that Fabregas was defending deep a lot of the time during the first half, passing it up to the wings & letting Clichy & Sagna make the quick runs down the sides & then towards the latter stages of the game he interchanged with Flamini who pretty much acted in Gilberto’s position. All this tells me that Wenger knows that there is still a huge problem in defence & his tactics of getting defenders to make regular attacking runs are gonna flounder if he can’t depend on them to do their original jobs as well.

At this rate our team is almost gonna have to look like a team that plays complete & ‘Total Football’. I don’t know if the players are up for that kind of thing. Its just going to open up a whole can of worms in terms of injuries where players are overworked to the point of exhaustion. Flamini is a case in point. The guy has to be all over the park to win the ball & then defend deep in crunch time as well. Wanna take bets on how long it will be before he gets injured too?

To me Flamini getting injured is a bigger cause for worry than Rosicky, Hleb, Gallas or even RVP. Its Flamini that’s been the bulldog for our team uptil now. He’s come into his own since the start of this season & you can see he’s been given the tough job of taking possession of the ball back for Arsenal in difficult situations.

The other worry is Fabregas. The guy has played every minute of every game this season & he’s the main reason we’re in serious contention for titles so early on. To ask him to rotate in & out of a defensive position is (in my mind) a recipe for disaster.

To sum up, if we don’t nix our defensive problems in the bud we’re gonna magnify our own problems for later in the season when it really hots up & we lose important players for the African Nations Cup in January. We gotta get a stable partner for Toure & we’ve got to lock down who’s gonna be regular 1st choice for goalkeeper coz that shit is still a major concern.

Fans like Franny Jeffers here are just naive and short sighted. An attacking team like United doesn’t turn dull overnight. Injuries and new players blending in are the reasons why United’s play was lacklustre for the past few games. A few dull games doesn’t make us a boring team. A few good games doesn’t make Arsenal or Liverpool a championship team. Don’t write United off, and at the same time don’t, for 1 sec, think that Arsenal and Liverpool had turned their respective corners already.

Short-sightedness can be cured… but foolishness like Franny Jeffers exhibits is incurable.
