‘Massive Setback’ – Wenger reacts after Arsenal defeat

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said his side has suffered a massive setback in their quest for the Barclays Premier League title, after suffering a 1-0 defeat against Stoke City at the Britannia on Saturday afternoon.

The Gunners failed to create enough clear cut opportunities as they struggled to match the physical playing style of Stoke. After a frustrating and lacklustre stalemate first half, the home side took the lead in the second half with with Jonathan Walters’ 75th minute penalty securing a crucial three points for the Potters.

Arsenal defender Laurent Koscielny was penalised for a handball in the box, which looked pretty harsh to be honest.

Wenger showed his frustration after the at the referee’s decision to award the penalty and admitted that his side was punished due to the failure in creating more chances.

“It’s not slightly worrying, it’s a big worry for us to lose a game like that. It’s a massive setback,” said the Gunners boss as quoted by talksport.

“To win a title, you have to perform when you’re expected to perform, it’s a simple as that.

“We were not fragile, our defensive performance was outstanding, Stoke created hardly anything at all. But our offensive game was poor by our standards, we didn’t create enough.

“However, I think we were unlucky to lose the game.

“Their goal was a nice gift from the referee, but that can happen. Koscielny was one yard away, how can he take his hand away? He had no time to take his hand away from the ball.

“There’s is no intention from him at all, but of course we can’t influence the decision of the referee, and I don’t want to talk about the referee.

“When you’re not good enough at creating chances you can be punished.

“You have to give credit to Stoke, they defended well with resilience, they made the game very physical.

“They have the highest number of fouls in the Premier League, and we knew that before the game, but we didn’t cope well enough with it, and we were punished.”

With that result Arsenal have moved to third in the table, four points behind Chelsea and behind Liverpool on goal difference.

  1. With big games coming thick and fast,I doubt Wenger can prove his critics wrong. Unless he can start showing the gunners can win games against the top teams,it will be another season to forget.
He has no one to blame but himself. I don’t know .Another striker was needed but no action taken . It’s good to prepare for the future but the present season matters more because Arsenal had such a good season to banish the trophy doubters.
Of course all is not lost but doubts are creeping in . Pool are 4 times mor likely to win the epl, according to the bookies.
If he wants to prove the bookies wrong.Wenger has no time left.

    • Agreed. We can blame the players but they are the players Arsene gathered and backed to play to his never changing game plan. We need a new Manager to start again. If not, it will be more of the same till he does retire.

  2. for God sake, what nonsensen is this man sayin? Just can imagin how foolish wenger is.imagine sumbody who built a house nd stupidly stingingly destroy it.its a same

  3. is wenger not to blame.i dont know why he always give us same old story all d time,he need to rest from football just like d others caoch.he doesnt know fit to caoch arsenal again he need rest.

  4. d players is to blame.they dont rise to occassions.player like carzola is a figure head in d team.he need to be benched.

  5. If arsenal end up thesame as last season…then mourinoh is probably right when he said wenger is an “expert in failure”

  6. i agree with morinho’s statement. wenger is a master of failure, i advice him to step a side and allow another person to try his luck.

  7. worried if wenger goes will we end up like utd but saying that look at the pool look at tott look at chelski all those managers/ stand ins seem 2 motivate team at half time we look crap till half time hope for a blasting and better second half but get the same old crap scared but maybe wenger does need to go or get someone else to do the half time talks

  8. I av said it times without numbers, time up for wenger, he had lost it, he has nothing new again, same playin style no matter d opposition. I just can’t understand wenger playin style, when great teams play fast, pacy attacking football and also usin wings, ozil need to play wingers, nd arsenal need to abandonbthis short passin games dat av no effect, play direct football but unfortunately wit wenger it is nt possible bcos he is one directional. time uppppppp wenger, quit wen d ovatn is loudest, give klopp, conte nd co chance

  9. for Gods sake , is arteta a defensive midfielder? look at what mou said d last time chelsea played arsenal, he said he told his players dat they shld nt worry abt arteta bcos he only play passes sideways which is true.wenger is a poor cioach, his little success is due to d world class playrrs st his disposal then…….henry, viera, adams, giberto, kanu, bergkam, pires, wiltord, giberto etc etc, infact if arsenal does nt take their time, spurs will nick 4th position

  10. Dont worry giv him another 10yrs bc is not a new thing to u Arsenal. He need time 10-15yrs. He may not b master in failure as the best analyser has said.
