FIFA have imposed a four-month football ban on Liverpool striker Luis Suarez (including a nine game international ban), with the Uruguayan striker not only to miss the rest of the 2014 World Cup, but also the start of the Premier League season.

The decision comes in the wake of Suarez being embroiled in controversy after the 27 year old was found guilty of misconduct as he appeared to have bitten Italian defender Giorgio Cheillini.

The incident occurred during Tuesday’s World Cup Group D game, which Uruguay won 1-0 thanks to Diego Godin’s header to qualify for the knockout stages of the showpiece event.

The FIFA have decided that Suarez had breached the disciplinary code of conduct (unsporting behaviour towards another player) and the controversial striker will be banned from any sort of footballing activity for four months.

“Such behaviour cannot be tolerated on any football pitch, and in particular not at a FIFA World Cup when the eyes of millions of people are on the stars on the field.”

“The Disciplinary Committee took into account all the factors of the case and the degree of Mr Suárez’s guilt in accordance with the relevant provisions of the Code. The decision comes into force as soon it is communicated,” said Claudio Sulser, chairman of the FIFA Disciplinary Committee”
