Manchester United’s Summer 2012 Transfer Targets

Manchester United’s Summer 2012 Transfer Targets

Manchester United may miss out on the title this year, but there are many things to look forward to next season.

United’s 1-0 loss to City puts them in a tie with their arch-rivals at the top of the table, but City’s goal difference is eight points better than United’s.

This is a lot of ground to make up in just two fixtures, and the Red Devils will likely finish as runners-up in 2011-12.

But the 2012-13 will be starting up in August; the clubs fans have every right to expect a better performance next season.

Manchester United will likely part with some of its veteran players in July and look to the transfer market to fill those holes with talented youngsters.

The Red Devils are regulars in the football gossip columns, but Alex Ferguson is a relatively frugal shopper compared to others in the Premiership. However, Fergie is surely lining up potential signings to create the next generation of his Manchester United squad. Below are some of the players the Red Devils have been linked to.

Javi Martinez – Central Midfielder (Athletic Bilbao)

The 23-year-old’s performances this season have seen him become one of the most coveted players in Europe. Sir Alex Ferguson, who had the chance to see Martinez close up when the Basque club knocked United out of the Europa League, is a long-term admirer of the Spain international. According to caught offside and various other sources, Fergie is prepared to spend £28m to sign the Spanish international midfielder.

Iker Muniain – Attacking Midfielder (Athletic Bilbao)

Nineteen-year-old Athletic Bilbao attacking midfielder Iker Muniain, who received his first cap for Spain earlier in the year, has caught the eye of Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson. But the Old Trafford club will have to shell out £29.5m for his services, according to the player’s agent.

Shinji Kagawa – Attacking Midfielder (Borussia Dortmund)

Shinji Kagawa after informing Borussia Dortmund he won’t sign a new contract—could be a Manchester United player next season. The 23-year-old former Cerezo Osaka star—whose contract runs out in June of 2013—was offered a new four-year deal, but turned it down, according to Dortmund’s sporting director Michael Zorc, who admitted that while money isn’t a priority, the club have no choice but to sell the playmaker.

Jan Vertonghen – Defender (Ajax)

With Nemanja Vidic still out injured and Rio Ferdinand in decline, the versatile Dutch defender could be a cut-price alternative, especially as he enters the final year of his contract and could be available for less than £7million.

Mathieu Debuchy – Right back (Lille)

Ever since Gary Neville decided to retire United have lacked consistency at right-back where Rafael is always capable of a costly loss of concentration. Lille defender Mathieu Debuchy could be the man to fill Gary Neville’s boots.

Jack Rodwell – Centre-back, Defensive Midfielder (Everton)

The cultured Everton defender seemed nailed on to become a United player before a series of injuries and loss of form cooled Ferguson’s interest. However, he has returned to type this season and could give Michael Carrick a few sleepless nights before the transfer window closes – unless Chelsea get in there first.

Javi Garcia – Defensive Midfielder (Benfica)

Schooled at Real Madrid, the Spanish defensive midfielder made an impression as Benfica all but ended United’s participation in the Champions League this season. A move to Old Trafford would give him bragging rights over cousin Luis who played for Liverpool – although United face competition from their City rivals.

Luka Modric – Attacking Midfielder (Tottenham)

The Croatian schemer had his heart set on a move to Chelsea last summer only to be denied by the powers that be at White Hart Lane. Fergie has been a long-time admirer of his creative talents – even if he doesn’t score many goals. Spurs may struggle to keep himthis time round but expect Daniel Levy to be drive a hard bargain.

Nicolas Gaitan – Attacking Midfielder (Benfica)

Another Benfica player who ran United ragged in the Champions League, Gaitan has been dubbed the ‘Argentine Cristiano Ronaldo’. There have been reports that a £20million deal has already been negotiated with the possibility of Fabio da Silva and Federico Macheda moving in the opposite direction.

Eden Hazard – Attacking midfielder, Forward (Lille)

The Belgian wonder kid has been courted by Premier League suitors including Arsenal, Tottenham and Manchester City ever since confirming he would leave Lille in the summer. The 21-year-old was said to be flattered after a personal visit from the Great Scot himself, which could place Fergie at the head of the queue.

Wesley Sneijder – Attacking midfielder, Forward (Inter Milan)

The Dutch maestro was the subject of a will he/won’t he? Transfer that lasted the entire close season last summer. Expect more of the same this time round as United still need a creative playmaker and Paul Scholes can’t last forever – although Sneijder might have to lower is wage demands.

Arjen Robben – Winger, Forward (Bayern Munich)

The Flying Dutchman passed up the chance to join United in 2004 after having his head turned by Roman’s roubles at Stamford Bridge. Despite a fragile constitution, he’s proved to be a world class player at Bayern Munich where a bust up with Franck Ribery could convince him to make a Premier League return.

Jordi Alba – Left Back (Valencia)

According to the Metro Sir Alex Ferguson’s side have added Valencia left-back Jordi Alba to their list of transfer targets as a long-term replacement for Patrice Evra. However, Manchester United will have to fork out £15m for the 23-year-old’s services.

Leighton Baines – Left Back (Everton)

Baines is another Left back Manchester United are supposedly targeting as a replacement for ageing full-back Evra. According to the Daily Mirror, the Reds may offer just £5m for the England international.

Gylfi Sigurdsson – Attacking Midfielder (Swansea)

Manchester United are considering a stunning £10million swoop for Swansea’s on-loan Icelandic star Gylfi Sigurdsson. Sir Alex Ferguson has been monitoring the midfielder, who is enjoying an outstanding campaign at the Liberty Stadium after arriving from German club Hoffenheim in January. United are now on red alert after Sigurdsson told Hoffenheim he wants to quit the Bundesliga.

Lucas Rodrigues Moura da Silva – Attacking Midfielder (Sao Paulo)

Brazilian side Sao Paulo have set a £40m asking price for Manchester United and Chelsea transfer target Lucas Moura. The 19-year-old attacking midfielder, who is also wanted by Real Madrid, has a £65m buyout clause in his contract.

Klaas Jan Huntelaar – Forward (Schalke)

United could be eyeing up Schalke striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar as a possible replacement for Dimitar Berbatov after the Netherlands forward rediscovered his form following difficult spells at Real Madrid and AC Milan. Sir Alex Ferguson is supposedly planning a £12m bid for Schalke striker.

James Rodriguez – Winger, Attacking Midfielder (Porto)

United are monitoring young star James Rodriguez, the player known as the South American Cristiano Ronaldo. The Colombian winger, 20, has told his club Porto that he wants to move to the Manchester Club.

Oscar de Marcos – Midfielder (Athletic Bilbao)

Manchester United want £26m Athletic Bilbao midfielder Oscar de Marcos, 22, after he starred for the Spanish side in the Red Devils’ Europa League downfall.

Why Manchester United Fans Should Remain Optimistic!
Footballers and the continued connection to horse racing

  1. Let me just wait and see because our (man u) suffering this season is because of last summer failure to fill in the weak positions such as midfield and defend. Let me hope the fans will not be ashamed like the one of this season.

  2. Of all the names i would really like to see Javi Martinez paired with Modric in the centre of the park. They certainly would be a massive upgrade as their style is suited to the way we play. But realistically i think at most we can only get one of the two and i still would prefer Martinez over Modric as we have Cleverly who will mature as well as those that who can cover. Other players like Alba/Baines & Debuchy/Rafael could be useful cover while integrating into the first team. The rest seems to be either fantasy or not really necessary given what we have;our wings are covered and our striking option is pretty decent of course not withstanding potential departures.

    • Cleverley is looking to be a great young player, i’m sure he’ll be quality again next season. I agree with your commment regarding the wings, with Valencia, Nani and Young, it seems we have that position covered. A central midfield of Martinez and Cleverly would be dangerous!

  3. D midfield needs instant fixing wt Modric& Hazard preferred. Likewise d defense& Rooney needs a formidable partner like Arjen Robben to give us glory again

    • I think we have good enough strikers going into next season, Rooney and Welbeck have formed a good partnership in their first season together. However, the midfield definitely needs some work.

  4. we need either wesley sneijder, iker munian, arjen robben, klaas jan huntelaar, eden hazard or nicolas gaitan. please fergie get any of those players and then United will become much stronger side next season than this season where we flopped and give city a much advantage.

  5. We need like_ javi martinez. luka modric. Bale and hazard. De Ge smoling evens vidic evra martinez modric bale valencia hazard rooney

  6. I’d go for llorente as a striker with Rooney playing just behind him, his goals for Bilbao this season have been amazing as has his all round set up play and holding up the ball to allow for fellow strikers and wingers to score

    • Llorente proved his worth against United in the Europa League. He would be a great player alongside Rooney like you say. However with Welbeck and Hernandez already in the squad, it’s unlikely Ferguson will play around £30 million to replace Berbatov.

  7. sell berba, pogba, wellbeck, nani, get in hazard, gutian, modric and lucas defffffffffffff

    • I think Berbatov and Pogba areleaving at the end of the season anyway. There’s no way we’ll sell Nani or Welbeck, two of our best players. Modric would be a great signing, as would Gaitan.I think Lucas will be too expensive for a realistic transfer to Old Trafford.

      • chris, welbeck one of our best players, what plannet are you on,have you watched every game this season?him and hernadez are not good enough for a team like utd, hernadez was so over rated last season, now look at him, spends most of the game offside, and does nothing,we need a striker and 2 midfielders, and not modric, great goal the other night, but again another over rated player in the premier……

  8. all of these are good players and i say united should invest in martinez, modric, rodriguez, llorente and vertonoghen and anyhting bonus would do nicely.

  9. Alba,De Marcos,Rodriguez. Would fit all the problem parts for many years. De gea Rafael evans vidic alba Valencia Carrick de marcos rodriguez Rooney welbeck

  10. We definitely need to add new players to the team and if that means spending big, then it simply has to be done as their is a huge risk city could have the title won by Xmas. City will spend big again this summer and will be looking at some of those players mentioned above. This is going to be one of the most major summers for all utd fans.

  11. United need to be quick to sign their preferred targets this summer. Last July they definitely lost out on Ozil and Nasri because of this.

    • De Gea

      Jones Smalling Vidic Baines

      Javi Martinez

      Valencia Modric Nani

      Buy: Sell:

      Modric 30m Berba : 10m
      Javi- 22m Park-6m
      Baines- 15-18m Owen- 2-3m

  12. At least Modric and Hazard, they are the top, and if they will come to United, they will be best two midfielders in the world

  13. v need a gr8 winger cause v might b havin lots of wingers but no 1 is as good compared to bayern nd v also need 2 change our form to compete 4 more trophies like 433 4321 4231 nd a good mid

  14. They sholud make sure they sell carrick, ferdnand and Evan and replace then buy lorente, hazard, gaitan and shinji kagawa

  15. 1. Right back (Nathaniel Clyne) 3M
    1. Left back (leighton baines) 5M
    1. Center Back (gerard pique ) 15M
    2. Midfielder (Hazard, 30M, Shinji Kagawa 15M)
    1. Striker (Clint Dempsey) 10M

    Total 78 Million

    • I agree Clyne would be a good buy but Baines just isn’t good enough for United and Dempsey is too old now.

  16. utd got to buy hazard kagawa and Huntelwar first and then think about a solid defence but even thoyh de gea is a gud keeper he isnt good enuf for a club like utd

  17. Either Modric or Hazard is a must. Left back Jordi Alba is ideal long term replacement for Evra. Fernando Llorente and Iker Muniain would be a great addition and would give us a more threatening attack. Also, Jan Vertonghen seems a STEAL for $7 million!!!!!

welbeck you cant test that team

    • Your midfield apart from Valencia lacks strength and defensive abilities and has three wingers plus Modric is overrated and Leighton Baines is not good enough for United.

  19. martinez, modric, kagawa, hazard are all good players but i know fergie can’t get them all because its in his phillosophy,we all know that he can only get may be two of them.but which two thats the big question.i hope he gets the best two.

  20. kagawa 7m, gaitan 20m, baines 5m, luuke de jong 12m and clyne free = £44m

    de gea
    rafael evans vidic evra
    valencia kagawa carrick young
    de jong rooney

hernandez/welbeck – rotate with de jong whoever on form, a lot of games/competitions also injuries are never known when happen so variety/options to choose from.

    de laet

kagawa 7, gaitan 26, baines 30, luuke de jong 9 and clyne 2.

  21. I don’t agree with Modric becoming a Manchester United player he is overrated. The players i think we should sell include Fletcher,Berbatov,Macheda,Pogba,Anderson,Fabio and Lindegaard.Players i think we should buy include Iker Muniain,James Rodriguez,Eden Hazard,Kyle Walker,Holger Badstuber,Jordi Alba or Gareth Bale and either Hugo Lloris or Manuel Neuer. We need a new younger manager because as good as Sir Alex has done over the years United need fresh new players and tactics to go with todays modern game i’d get Brendan Rogers in.

  22. GK-Manuel Neuer RB-Kyle Walker CB-Holger Badstuber CB-Nemanja Vidic LB-Patrice Evra DM-Michael Carrick AM-Iker Muniain RW-Luis Valencia LW-Nani ST-Wayne Rooney ST-Danny Welbeck Subs-Eden Hazard,,David De Gea,Javier Hernandez,Phil Jones,James Rodriguez,Jan Vertonghen,Jordi Alba. Park,Scholes,Giggs,Ferdinand,Young,Rafael,Smallingand Cleverley as backups.

  23. Buy- modric, sneijdar, javi martinez, axel witsel, gaitan, hazards,c.ronaldo…these will solve the problems of midfield…for forwards buy tevez and luuk dejong and for defence pique and baines… united please buy these players….its an request from a fan who loves united very much..!

  24. Buy Lucas moura baines as evras getting on and for me has had an average season. Get a centre half maybe subotic. A decent right back if theres any out there. Then a proper centre midfielder like mvila or tiote. Carricks on his own in the middle and doesnt get respect he deserves. If we were spending big I would get Lorente but I think rooney wellbeck is a decent partnership. Were ok on the wings but moura would be a great investment if not maybe munian.

  25. What man utd lacks is creativity in da midfild that is defensive midfilder, central midfilder .utd need to get talents from south america to add flavour to the game.

  26. i agree with fred omondi bcaus we giv the ball away 2 easily and up in forward rooney is the only real striker bcauzzz welbeck and chicharito lack expierience so we need someone like cavani or ozil in the team

  27. Too many changes to the team’s core should be avoided + Evans has been a great performer for United….Bring in some reinforcements in the midfield and a full back ..that’s what we need

  28. If United make at least 5 new signings, they could field two superior teams…..My 5 signings are. (Baines, Kagawa, Michu, Lewandowski & Hazard)

    Team 1.
    1. De Gea
    2. Jones
    3. Ferdinand
    4. Evans
    5. Evra (Baines)
    6. Scholes (Shinji Kagawa)
    7. Carrick (Boetang/Michu)
    8. Valencia
    9. Rooney
    10. Welbeck (Lewandowski)
    11. Nani (Hazard)

    Team 2.
    1. Lindegaard
    2. Rafeal
    3. Vidic
    4. Smalling
    5. Evra
    6. Scholes
    7. Carrick
    8. Young
    9. Welbeck
    10. Hernandez
    11. Nani

    What do you think?

  29. fergie think about the future manchester.u need to spend if u want improvement on your team.anderson, park, ferdinand, berbatov, are not suitable even for a team in martinez, hazard, alba, bains, and mavila.otherwise you`l always enjoy man city winning the trophy.

  30. im a man united fan and man city are gonna kick our arses all over the place this upcoming season as ferguson spends money on shit players plus i thought he was meant to be retiring about 5 years ago he should have gone then.

  31. shinji kagawa welcome to manu
it looks likely we will get get baines and gaitan
    de gea

    jones vidic evans baines

    valencia kagawa gaitan nani

    rooney welbeck

  32. its not going to be a bye bye bye season at utd . people seem to forget that fifa fair play rules are in now . and we will see some young players coming in and players going out . utd have always bought young players in with an odd big bye .its not going to be like in the past where all the big teams where out off the blocks quick .take a look at the way newcastle have brought in to great strikers for 12million demba ba and cisse . this is going to be the way teams will have to go . but there will be those that spend big . well thats up to them but they will be effected by this f f play rules if they dont match the rules they could be band from champs lg or fined heavely
