For most of the game (ok, all of it), it was a even affair, both sides canceling each other out and the game itself sorely failing to live up to the pompous and wasteful ceremony that preceded it (Prince William looked f’n bored with it).
And then one Didier Drogba, with one of his best goals this season (and possibly his most important) put Chelsea ahead in the 2nd half of extra time, and after that there was no going back. Chelsea took the yellow cards and the Man Utd pressure and got their FA Cup win.
It would be harsh to say that either side was better – it was even, boringly so (I slept through the second half, and was reliably informed that that was probably the best thing to have done).
The one incident of note that will perhaps rankle Manchester United fans a bit was the ‘goal that wasn’t given’, Ryan Giggs sliding into Cech and pushing the ball over the line. The refs couldn’t see it but the camera caught it, and this one is definitely one that could have gone either way. Without video replays, you never know.
To be very honest, the result was fair considering the quality of the goal. And if anyone knows where Drogba went straight after the whistle, let me know. Methinks he went to call his mum, but he could have gone to take a leak or whatever.
Match Videos
Giggs vs Cech – did it cross the line?
Drogba and Lampard vs United – The goal that won the game.
Hopefully people will stop bashing Lamps after this – he does a lot more than just shoot, you know.

Preview
The 2007 FA Cup final is being trumpeted as something special, and by all accounts it should be – the top 2 teams in the Premiership are contesting it, and in the history of the FA Cup, it’s only the 3rd time that the top 2 league teams are in the final.
It’s special because of the new Wembley – perhaps a target of ridicule but also England’s testament to it’s self-proclaimed stewardship of the beautiful game.
It’s special because it’s an end-of-the-season showpiece between the two best sides in the country – and perhaps two of the best sides in Europe.
Unfortunately, the FA Cup final is also a lame duck.
It’s a distinct second to the Champions League final taking place 4 days later – a game that could have been the grand finale of a tremendous season and the ’3rd final’.
A 3rd-place fight isn’t the best thing for a Saturday afternoon, but to make it even lamer, both sides have key personnel injured. Manchester United will once again either play a 4-4-1-1 with Giggs supporting Rooney up front or draft in Ole or Smith to replace the injured Saha. Chelsea have lost Carvalho, Ballack and Shevchenko to injury, with Ashley Cole, Obi Mikel, Arjen Robben and Salomon Kalou carrying niggles.
So in most aspects, it will be a spectacle and a hard-fought game but with a bitter undercurrent of regret. If the last game between the two sides was anything to go by though, that regret could easily be replaced with anger if a few mistimed tackles from Smith or Mikel connect.
A month ago (April 16th), I wrote this intro to the final:
Where will you be on 19th May, 2007? History will be in the making at Wembley, whichever way you want to look at it.
Manchester United will take on Chelsea at Wembley in a clash of wills, strength and skills with a dash of class thrown in from either side.
Both sides are evenly matched and will have an equal chance to win, although injuries could take their toll. With Manchester United’s form this season and Chelsea’s never-say-die attitude, the final promises to be a bloody and glorious classic.
We’ll know today who’s going to come up trumps, so there’s little point in discussing tactics or ‘why my team will beat yours’.
I’ll put up the match report, team lineups and goal videos as soon as I get my hands on them.
Watch this space.

Football News 24/7
Expect Ronaldo to be starting on the left. Chelsea’s right side is probably their weakest point in their armoury.
April 16th, 2007 @ 14:59I wouldn’t be surprised, if we return to our european style footie in this one with Rooney on the left, Giggs in the middle and Ronaldo on the right…Saha or Smith a lone striker. Amith did an excellent job holding on to the ball against both Roma and Watford and look back in form. We need to close down the center of the field against Chelsea, since that’s where all their movement come from. We’d play with Carrick and Scholes in the center and Giggs in the free role to create some disturbance in the Chelsea back-4, which at no time since Terry’s comeback has looked as solid as previously. If we can just keep the movement up front from lately, they’ll be in dire straits imo. Keep the ball on the ground and run wirlwind like.
Put the kaybash on Lampard and Cole, and we’ll have come a long way. Closing down Lampard is about denying him space to shoot and in-box runs, since his passing skills aren’t that fantastic. Better giving him a little space for passing 20 yards from the box than for shooting just outside. Neville should be back to close down Cole, so I’m not too worried about that. Hopefully Vidic will be back to take the punch out of Drogba.
April 16th, 2007 @ 15:32I definately think manchester united is going to win chelsea in fa cup final without no doubt i think that ronaldo, rooney and carrick is going to score
April 16th, 2007 @ 18:37I think man-u are goin 2 frash chelsea and i bet that for 100 pounds
April 16th, 2007 @ 18:40To Tomas
.If Vidic not back, manu in big trouble.Mentally we have edge against manu.We not under pressure, manu is.Cant wait this game.It will be classic – 2 best teams in the world. And also there are chance in Champions Legue final. That will be interesting:)
April 16th, 2007 @ 19:35You wish. You can wish, but you forget that now manu have injury problems, not chelsea.Ballack with Lampard was amazing against balckburn,so can expect more improvement.About chelseas back 4 also no problems,we have best keeper in the world,2 best central defenders, and best left back.Only 1 weak point is right back.Sheva start show something against big teams,so can expect from him big HI
the match is a long way away
April 16th, 2007 @ 19:38there mite some more surprises by then
too early to talk
chelsea will be looking to win, man u will be looking to score.
April 17th, 2007 @ 01:00Man U will more than meet its match on May 19th, unless C. Ronaldo decides to take up Chelsea on his own, and decides to play not the Man U way but the Portugese way.
Chelsea’s only weakness is at both the left and right back positions, which is the reason that Ronaldo MUST start out on the wings. Then he can work his way inwards, either to the goal, or to draw more Chelsea players towards him such that he can create goals for others.
A secondary factor for Man U will be Rooney. If Man U are going to win, then Rooney has to produce the form and flair of a couple of years ago. That would also mean that he has to abandon the Man U way and be as inspirational as Ronaldo. However, unlike Ronaldo, what are the chances that Rooney can escape the regimentation of Sir Alex!
Apart from that I don’t see a way for hectic Man U to deal with the calm and unstoppable threat of Chelsea. In fact I believe AC Milan, which is half as physical as Chelsea, will give a case-study performance of the manner in which Man U can be outclassed.
As for Chelsea they simply need to do their thing. They also have to work out a way to support Ashley Cole and whomever plays on the other side of defence. They also have to urge their attackers to drop back more and link with the midfield since of late that has been most lacking.
If it seems that I am biased towards Chelsea then let me say that I am not. As a matter of fact I support the better football unconditionally, so should Man U perform on the day then I will be the first to sing their praises.
Nonetheless, I still believe that Man U will be outdone when the hour cometh, for then cometh Chelsea!
April 17th, 2007 @ 03:49Manchester WILL beat Chelsea…it will be a hard fought win and well worth watching…United has too many good players to lose…all they have to do is pull together and work as a competent, skilled team…they may be a young team, but that won’t even be seen as a factor that’ll hold them back

April 20th, 2007 @ 01:42For Manchester United. 4-2-3-1 will have them beating Chelsea. that way they will match Chelsea’s strength in midfield and negate Mourinho’s favorite tactic of pushing Essien to right back.
For Chelsea it;s a case of having a really great day defensively and nicking one on the other end
April 20th, 2007 @ 13:36MANU SHOULD not WIN THE CUP and they will lose the cup cause their deffence is not good exept ferdinand and silvester
April 20th, 2007 @ 14:46i dont think manu will win by having a formation 4-2-3-1 and not only that they are not going to win with any formation
April 20th, 2007 @ 14:50Mourinho must take some action on the left and right back but they are not so weak but still a bit of improvements. Talking about the champions league liverpool are the faviourates so i feel liverpoll are going to take the cup
April 20th, 2007 @ 14:56chelsea will win no doubt, they will absolutely be on top like they were when they tharshed manchester united 3-0!!
c.ronaldo is rubbish and will certainly be kept quiet by englands lb ashley cole!!
April 22nd, 2007 @ 23:45manu rulzs
April 24th, 2007 @ 09:52i THINGS THAT CHEALSY WILL DEFEAT MANU IN THE FINAL BECAUSE DROGBHA IS IN THE GREAT FORM TO PUT THE BALL IN THE NET AND LAMPARD THE CLEAN SHOOTER AND BALLACK THE EYE IN THE CORNER OF THE NET,ASHELEY COLE THE SIDE LINE MACHINE AND THE MOST DIFFICULT DEFENDER. SO THERFORE IT IS VERY TO BEAT CHEALSY.
JOHNSOM
April 27th, 2007 @ 11:15CHEALSY WILL RULE THE WORLD IN THE FOOTBALL AND WILL BLAST THE MAN U AND THEY WILL SHIFT THEM OUT OF THE FA CUP.
April 27th, 2007 @ 11:18Chelsea has a good chance, just like everybody else…..overall though United is just a better team and that’ll definantly be shown in the game against Chelsea
April 27th, 2007 @ 19:50[...] game will be a preview or a dressed rehearsal if you will, for the FA Cup Final and even possibly the Champions League final. There is so much at stake for both teams that I [...]
April 30th, 2007 @ 17:30I have no doubts for Chelsea, i’m sure Maurinho will provide Chelsea with the FA Cup on the 19th.
May 8th, 2007 @ 01:03I expect atleast 1 or 2 goals for Drogba!
shaks, C.Ronaldo rubbish?? He’s won 4 awards this season already. ashley cole shutting down ronaldo?? not even in ur dreams bro..
May 8th, 2007 @ 10:59it will be a good tough game..im supporting Man Utd as im a United fan.good luck to chelski is all i can say but the cup is ours!
i think chelsea will get a thrashing as there side are not up for what man u can give them also on wednesday manu can see how chelsea play as its the premiership and man u have already won it
May 8th, 2007 @ 14:37I think manchester will win but i think it would come a lot easier if they put saha in with rooney
May 10th, 2007 @ 06:31I am definitely SURE that Chelsea will beat Manchester Uni.
May 10th, 2007 @ 11:45thought the game will be tough. But with Drogba, Lampard…… and Morino’s tactics they will WIN! Therefore as i am a supporter of Chelesea, the cup is ours!!!
it will be a very hard and a very close one!
May 10th, 2007 @ 14:02i think the team who dominate the midfield will win………..for MAN UTD ronnie and rooney are the the key if these guys combine and fire along with giggsy, scholes and carrick then i think chelsea will be purely outclassed!
I hope MAN UTD gets the cup!!!!!!!
First of all i would like to tell that Chelsea is never going to get the F.A.CUP 2007 because they suck and they will suck without Dider Drogba.I am for sure that MANCHESTER UNITED will get the cup and chelsea will never get it.I am C.Ronaldo’s cousin and i told him to take revenge and he said i will take revenge and i said good.I told him if your team wins i will pay you $5000 and he said u got it dude.

May 10th, 2007 @ 17:49This is the kind of match you dream about. Chelsea and Man United are the best teams in football. United deserved the Priemership outlasting an often injured Blues team with high priced mercinaries that failed to play to their price tags. However, the core stars of Chelsea (minus Carvaliho) will be healthy and ready for the 19th. If Mourinho can figure out a way to defend without using Essien as a center-back, the score could be rather lopsided. I am looking for J. Cole, Drogba, and Robben to make the winning impact. Chelsea 2 Manchester United 1. As long as liverpool gets thrashed, I can still be happy.
May 12th, 2007 @ 06:36am a chelsea fan so i really want them to win the FA cup although nmanu have been the stronger team this year i really hope we win it !! cuz they have already won the premiership. I think the score might en 2-1 2 chelsea i mean i hope lol ******* good luck chelsea With drogba as a brillent striker and john terry as a excellent defender i think and hope we will do well !!!!!!!!!!!!1
May 14th, 2007 @ 02:29For Manutd to win it , they will have to play a classic 4-4-2 with Giggsy & Ronaldo on the wings swapping places , so that the marking becomes impossible.Thank fully Rio & Vidic are back & so is Erva , Brown will be there as RB. I hope that Smithy plays in this one.& Just choke up the set plays
For Chelsea to win it , they have to play Joe Cole , Robben is out injured. Their long ball system won’t work over here.
May 14th, 2007 @ 03:05The only way to defeat United is luck & flair. Arsenal & Milan played the sleek football & they got the win.
But Chelsea aren’t good enough to play that brand of football , so I reckon it will an United win.
This is a dream game and I can’t wait for it. However, does anyone know what TV channels are airing the game live?
Thanks
May 14th, 2007 @ 11:16I think United has the strongest side. They have world class players and play together as a team. what made previous united teams- I mean the one that win the treble- a strong team was the fact that they almost grew almost all together- the beckhams, neville, giggs etc..
what makes this team, a winning side is the pairing of Ronaldo and Rooney. They are still young and it took them 3 years but they are finally meeting the expectations. There is plenty to come from them. They deserve to win in the brand new wembley statium. Futhermore the got Sir Alex Ferguson who is the most experienced manager- not just in the premiership but in the whole world.
Ask me again the question..
Will United Win???
YEAH they will
May 15th, 2007 @ 19:45I thuink man utd will beat chelsea in every area of the field ashley cole will be wishin he isnt playin due to ronalds skill and ronaldo will skip by him like he wasnt there
MANCHESTER UNITED
May 16th, 2007 @ 13:31well,my opinion is dat d 2 coaches re very good so they ll b playin an attackin game since its results dey want and with d support from d fans too whao,i tip it 4 man u 1-0 but whatever happens let d best team win
May 16th, 2007 @ 18:07CHELSEA WIL WIN!!!!!!!!
May 16th, 2007 @ 19:42Chelsea will beat Manchester by 3goals to 2.
May 16th, 2007 @ 21:54Chelsea first goal is drogba
second goal is lampard and kalou for the third goal.
iam ready to bet for 50 pounds
I have a more interesting bet
I say United beat Chelsea 2-1 , chelsea’s goal : a Fat Frank Ddflected special of course ! United with Ronaldo and Rooney
Bets aside , a very tough game for both teams , United have Gazza and Saha out , Chelski have Sheva Carvalho and Mikel out. But Chelsea have strenth in depth and most likely those injuries wouldn’t be too costly bar the Carvalho one , he has been tremendous for them this season. Im hoping for Boulharouz to come in and replace him because he garantees us a penalty with his silly tackling and abysmal defending
Ronaldo would tear him to pieces.
I can’t wait for this, pressure on Chelsea more than United , we are the champions in the end of the day , win or lose. Hopefully we’ll win , if we lose , that would be bitter but still Champions. Chelski have it all to do.
United all in the way in Wembley !
Championes ! Championes ! Ole ! Ole ! Ole
Here’s for the double !
May 16th, 2007 @ 22:26i think its a long game.. man.u really need this fa cup but chelsea not give easyly.. there lose in uefa and and they really need this cup.. so, both team will give full commitment for the match.. chelsea has advantage to push down man.u..
May 17th, 2007 @ 07:38i think Chelsea will win this match.Coz i sure they have good players
May 17th, 2007 @ 13:24come on man u. Glory glory glory man united, glory glory glory man united well beat chelsea 7 . 0
May 17th, 2007 @ 15:47Everyone has seemed to forgotten that Man Utd are the champions and in 2 days time they will complete the double. So for all u chelsea fans stop being optamistic be realistic!!! Glory Glory Man Utd….
May 17th, 2007 @ 17:17CHELSEA WILL WIN AND GABS WILL STREAK DOWN OXFORD STREET IF WE DO!!!
May 18th, 2007 @ 09:44Chelsea will win 4-1
May 18th, 2007 @ 17:20The cup is ours!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
and Fergie BEWARE DROGBBBBBBBBBBAAAAAAA!
and of course Lampard
Be very very very Afraid old man!
The hour has arrived, and I can’t wait to see chelsea get trashed all over the park. The score is going to be 3-0 in favour of Man U. Renaldo will score 2, and Rooney 1. Go boys go and grab the cup, its ours all the way. Im not even going to wish you guys good luck, theres nothing lucky about being on a winning side. Cheeers.
May 19th, 2007 @ 00:40i think that man u have as much chance as chelsea do it all depends on how they play on the day….
May 19th, 2007 @ 01:01cheasea go go go dont let the guys win
May 19th, 2007 @ 02:50It should be a classic, but as a neutral, I do fancy Man U might be too good. If Man U can close down Drogba (a fabulous player), they’ll take away Chelsea’s major route to goal.
Man U on the other hand have many players who can stick the ball in the net, and that’s their biggest advantage. Chelsea win games, but Man United score goals, and in a cup final, it’s not the defence who wins games – it’s goals.
Manchester United 4 – Chelsea 2
May 19th, 2007 @ 03:10Wow…today’s THE DAY!!!
True Chelsea are missing some key players but it would b recklessly unfair to rule them out in todays game~
MU on the other hand has handfull of 1st startups…not forgetting Vidic who has juz recovered…so MU has rely the upper hand later~
ANYWAYZ…Chelsea still has some power to propel them forward pas v.der sars keeping…shaun w. phillips n lampard should rely giv it a go n score…
So…i say it would b a 1-1 ending n thru penalties…Chelsea to win the FA Cup…no offense mu fans

May 19th, 2007 @ 20:54Chelsea did wat they always do.Hang on until the end playing boring football & then score a goal in the dying moments.Heart breaking.
May 19th, 2007 @ 21:40I’m not going to complain here. They got the win fair and square, good thing it came from open play rather than penalties.
Giggsy’s chance is a talking point, but if the ref can’t see it and the linesman can’t see it then there’s not much to say. I think it was a goal, but it won’t matter.
Glad the whole thing is over, now I need to hide till the final is over and then we can talk about next season.
May 19th, 2007 @ 21:50wot a boring match. one of the worst all season (compared 2 other mqn united matches). once agen ferguson confuses me. heinze instead of evra? brown instead of oshea? fletcher instead of smith? we shud play 4 4 2. maybe time 4 a new manager? wot u think ahmed? we are talking about a big club and we need a new manager, new blood!! u can go on talking about all the trophies he wins, but we shud be winning those anyway!! fergie shud learn a few tips on tactics from benitez. agen, wot a shit match.
May 19th, 2007 @ 21:56and the giggs goal wasnt a goal. it passed the line but tht was cos of giggs fouling cech. how boring r chelsea.
May 19th, 2007 @ 21:57WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO chelsea diserved 2 win da FA cup xxx
May 19th, 2007 @ 21:59Sam, you want a manager like Benitez. Seems you are one of those who would prefer glory brought from boring efficient play more than supporting a club with a proud history of the most entertaining football possibly in Europe. Immature of you to suggest Fergie should go, and how you think O’Shea should be in rather than Brown i will never go. Chelsea are a side of very high quality, Ronaldo didnt perform and a mixture of those two things lead to us losing the game. Simple as, dont be an idiot and call for Sir Alex’s head.
PS. I am truly gutted about the loss, a double wouldve tasted so sweet.
May 19th, 2007 @ 22:13Thank you very much the match and the beautiful goal. Thank you the cup and the happiness because of the victory. Thank you super Frank Lampard! Thank you the superest John Terry!!!!!!! Thank you that you live!!!!! CONGRATULATION FOR THE BEST TEAM IN THE WORLD!!!!!
May 19th, 2007 @ 22:15LameO. Well…..at least there was a goal and it didn’t go to a shootout. The blues fared better 1st half and Reds looked more opportunistic in the second. Pretty hum-drum overall. I do think Drogba should have been wearing the head gear instead of Chech though. For all of the times he goes down in a game clutching at his head…
SAF’s choice was tactically sound imo Sam.
Heinze > Evra: Pat would have been pushing up on the attack a bit much and no doubt would have left SWP tons of space to exploit. Heinze was getting involved in the attack at the Chealsea end with some crosses but was also able to keep Wright-Phillips in check. I’m sure he was also picked over Evra for his aerial skills as Chealsea are a major threat in the air.
Brown > O’Shea: Wes was chosen for his speed, hard tackles and his understanding with Rio. He totally neutered Robben with that sideline tackle and Chealsea never really got behind us (with the exception of the goal anyways). As a utility player, O’Shea provides more options and he was surely meant to come off the bench to tighten things down in midfield if Man Utd was to ever go ahead.
Fletcher > Smith: Fletch has been much improved and was selected to soundly deal with Cole as you woundn’t want Alan Smith tracking all the way back to deal with crosses.
I had a good laugh about sacking SAF. Just out of curiosity, who would you put in his place Sam?
May 19th, 2007 @ 22:54izhar u seriously related 2 c.ronald? well ur cousin choose perfect time 2 not score a goal.i feel sorry 4 man u cuz they lost even though i luv liverpool.hradluck dude. frickin chelsea!
May 20th, 2007 @ 00:15it was an evenly contested match but whwn it came to fitness chelsea clearly showed united who are fitter and kept goin to the final minutes to get the goal, brialliant match
May 20th, 2007 @ 04:30lol, yeh brown did great didnt he!! and im not 2 sure heinze is better than evr @ defending? aerialy he isnt 2 bad either. brown better than oshea? maybe as central defender, but nit right back, jst look at their recent perfomances!! and browns crosses were terrible. oshea wud have scored 2 had he had the chance, lol.
we shud have had 4-4-2!!! wen will fergie understand. and 4 fk sake play ronaldo on the right.
2 be honest even if we had won, i still wudnt mind a new manager. i luv fergie 2, but its time for sum1 new. and 2 be honest a lot of ppl wud do the job well, esp with the players we have! and who wud turn down a chance 2 coach united! if not now, then 2 yrs max!
hopefully ahmed will magically appear and help me out of my cornered situation…..
May 20th, 2007 @ 04:40United should not have played 4-5-1.
Smith should have played against Fletcher, with Scholes given his usual role with Carrick operating as the holding mid.
With these defensive tactics, United desrved to lose.
May 20th, 2007 @ 10:42A Man, when have Chelsea ever NOT played defensive tactics?
May 20th, 2007 @ 13:21I’m sorry to be bitter but Giggs’ ‘goal’ is come-uppance for the Pedro Mendes ball-crossing-the-line incident. Serves them right, though I do hate Chelsea and wanted United to win.
May 20th, 2007 @ 17:32what a poor poor match, didn’t get near the expectation.
May 20th, 2007 @ 18:50Both teams were afraid to lose and to try something different. Chelsea probably deserved to win in the end and …RYAN GIGG’S GOAL CLAIM WAS FALSE AS HE FOULED CECH. however, a better talking point is that did Essien foul Giggs as he tried to stop him. Ithink he did.
The game was crap both teams would not try to attack to much in case the other team would get them on the counter attack. I thought it would be a great match with alot of battling and i was very dissapointed. Scholes was being a very dirty player and he should have been sent off.
May 21st, 2007 @ 16:22i cant belive that man u lost 2 chelsea
May 24th, 2007 @ 13:43i dont c y ppl get all up tight ova a football match at the end of the day its only a football match i mean manchester united always have next tym to win
May 24th, 2007 @ 13:45well.. teh way i see teh match.. it was a fair win.. ManU should just learn to accept a loss..
May 28th, 2007 @ 01:14anyways, tis’ always a penalty when you lose.
i luv man u…der da bestst team alive!!! chelsea is crap..so wot if dey won da FA cup…bt hu won da premiershp!!

September 20th, 2007 @ 21:32i am interesting man united
October 6th, 2007 @ 01:07it was my desire that chelsea could bit manu with out any doubt.what force me to desire such is that at that time chelsea was in greater position than manu though manu were the leaders in the premier league.chelsea had greater players that could bit manu, like frank lampard(the bullet shooter),john terry(the unbreakable)and also didier drogba(king of the penalty).but manu the only dangerous player is ryan giggs and i thought if cfc players attent at him carefully they could be benefitted from that much .but ronaldo does not show that much great play with great teams like cfc and arsenal.and also talking in playing foot ball ,cfc plays greatly than manu.and at last i wanna say ever glory to the blues and ever lost to the racist red devils.bye bye
