Manchester United star explains his plan to beat City

Rooney celebrating with team

Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney has a plan to beat Manchester City when the two Manchester clubs face each other in the derby clash at Old Trafford today.

Both clubs have few injuries and will be without the services of their star player. For Red Devils, they will miss having Luke Shaw in the left-back as the ex-Southampton defender will spend more time on the sidelines after breaking his leg in the Champions League clash against PSV Eindhoven.

City also have major injury concerns for the derby as Manuel Pellegrini confirmed star players Sergio Aguero, David Silva, Samir Nasri, Gael Clichy and summer signing Fabian Delph will miss the weekend fixture.

Despite having several City players on the treatment table, Rooney believes their summer signing Kevin De Bruyne and Raheem Sterling can create problems to Louis van Gaal’s side. He has urged his teammates to give special attention to these players and believes nullifying them will give United a huge chance of beating their neighbours.

“Nowadays the top teams have such good squads that they can cope with injuries. The players they brought in cost over £100million in De Bruyne and Sterling, so they are two fantastic young players and we have to nullify their threats and take advantage of their flaws,” Rooney told United Review.

“Raheem is a fantastic player and a great lad as well, but he is still a young lad and still has a lot to learn. The good thing about Raheem is that he wants to learn. He has started his career at City really well, but hopefully we can slow him down a bit on Sunday and come out on top.”

Wilfired Bony will be the striker up front to lead City’s attack in the absence of the Argentine international. Jesus Navas, De Bruyne and Sterling are likely to the three players playing behind the former Swansea man.

United summer signing Morgan Schneiderlin believes the outcome of the derby clash will not define his side’s season. However, a victory over City will see Red Devils issue a warning to other title contenders.
