Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal had kept the media guessing about the club’s potential next signing, when he claimed there could still be ‘a surprise’ before the close of the transfer window.

Having bolstered the midfield region, focus now shifts back on signing a top class striker and a proven central defender. But before that, the club must ensure they solve the goal keeping conundrum; a goal keeper, who won’t replace David de Gea, but will play a second fiddle to the Spaniard at United.

Man United transfer news

While United have been linked with several top goal keepers throughout the summer, the likes of Hugo Lloris, Jasper Cillessen et al, but The Times reckon that United are close to signing Argentina goal keeper Sergio Romero, as a replacement for Victor Valdes.

Madrid have signed Kiko Casilla to replace their club legend Iker Casillas, and a general feeling runs like Los Blancos will wait until next summer to sign De Gea on a free transfer. While De Gea is increasingly likely to stay put, his compatriot, Valdes is all set to leave the club, after refusing to play in a reserve-team match last season.

Should United manage to sign Romero, the Argentine international will become the fifth player to join Old Trafford this summer, following the arrivals of Memphis Depay, Matteo Darmian, Morgan Schneiderlin and Bastian Schweinsteiger.
