€40m Manchester United target tempted for transfer move

Marek Hamsik has cut a frustrated figure for Napoli over the past couple of seasons. The club captain has struggled with his form and he no longer looks the kind of player for which a host of European clubs once hovered around at San Paolo to acquire his signature. I had earlier written why the Slovakian has struggled under Rafa Benitez and it seems that the same problems persist.

Hamsik is surely one of Napoli’s favourite sons but reports from Italian media outlet Football Italia published a story last night that the 27 year old and his family was insulted by home fans. The report states that he was loudly jeered when he substituted, throwing his armband aside during Napoli 2-2 draw with minnows Empoli.

It is believed that Hamsik could be tempted with a move away from Naples and we had reported that Manchester United were interested in him in the summer. Though Hamsik has never quite desired a move away from the San Paolo there is a reported price tag of €40m placed on the attacking midfielder.

Moreover, with Napoli closing in on Manolo Gabbiadini from Sampdoria and Jonathan de Guzman’s good run of form could also see the Slovak being pushed out of the starting eleven. Hamsik has faced off field problems while at Naples. He was infamously rubbed twice, in 2008 and 2013, the latter being at gunpoint.

His wife was also car-jacked while pregnant in 2011. All of this certainly hints that Hamsik would be well off to a place where he can regain his form without facing off field problems but will United make a bid for him in January?
