Manchester United to turn their attentions to Yohan Cabaye

Reports are emerging Manchester United are keen to turn to Newcastle midfielder Yohan Cabaye after losing out on their two main targets.

Premier League champions Manchester United have faced a long and unfulfilling quest to find a long-term replacement for central-midfielder Paul Scholes.

This summer, ex-Barcelona midfielder Thiago Alcantara and current Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fabregas were two of many transfer targets the Premier League side were hoping to procure.

However, with Thiago having joined up with his old Barcelona manager with Champions League winners Bayern Munich, and Cesc Fabregas seemingly ruling out a move claiming he’s happy at Barcelona, United’s attention could be back on a previous transfer target.

Newcastle’s deep-lying playmaker Yohan Cabaye, 27, has been made to endure rumours about his future for the last two years. Arsenal and Liverpool were two sides along with Manchester United who were also reportedly interested in him.

‘I heard about United’s interest in me, but things are only just beginning. I have a bit of experience of clubs following me, so I would rather not get carried away by thinking too much about such things.’ – Yohan Cabaye speaking in 2011.

Fast-forward two years, and it’s a different situation at Newcastle. The North-East side survived after being dragged into a relegation battle, and this summer have faced rumours about manager Alan Pardew’s job security.

During his time in the Premier League with Newcastle, Cabaye has scored 10 goals and has made 10 assists in 70 games. For France, the midfielder has made 23 appearances, scoring once.

The 2014 World Cup is approaching next season, and playing at Manchester United would certainly put him in contention of making the final squad.

United haven’t made an official bid for Cabaye, but they’re waiting to see if they can persuade Fabregas away from Barcelona before making a formal approach for the Newcastle man.
