Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera has hailed Luke Shaw as one of the best left-backs in the world.

The 21-year-old returned to action for the first time since last September when the Red Devils sealed a 2-0 victory over Wigan Athletic at the DW Stadium. A double leg fracture in the Champions League clash against PSV Eindhoven at the start of the last season forced him to spend the rest of the previous campaign on the sidelines.

After managing to regain fitness, Shaw returned to training at the end of the last season. However, he did not feature for the 20-time English champions. The former Southampton defender even played the full 90 minutes in Jose Mourinho’s side’s 4-1 defeat to Borussia Dortmund in the pre-season fixtures.

Herrera was delighted to see the England international back in action and claims his teammates want Shaw to contribute even in United’s attack.

“He has played for 90 minutes after 10 months without playing,” Herrera told United’s official website.

“You can see he is very, very quick and sometimes when you are not used to getting the ball at your feet then you can make some mistakes, but what we want from Luke is that he gets to the last line to make some crosses and he is doing that.

“We are very happy with him and we are very happy for him because it has been very tough for him. We have one of the best left-backs in the world and we have to take advantage of him.”

Meanwhile, Demba Ba, the former Newcastle United and Chelsea striker also broke his leg while in action for his current club Shanghai Shenhua in China. Shaw has sent a message to the 31-year-old former Premier League striker after United’s defeat to Dortmund.

“I am so sorry to hear of the news of your latest injury. Obviously I have been through the same thing so I know how you are feeling right now. But I think the main thing for you now is to keep strong, and to keep your family and friends close,” Shaw said.

“For me that was the most important thing at the time, to have the people that I care about the most next to me. So I am sending all my best, I hope the operations go well, your recovery goes quickly and you are back on the pitch in no time. I am sure you will be stronger than ever.”
