When The Sun (usually not reliable when it comes to transfer rumours) first published the Neymar to Manchester United transfer rumour, we all laughed at the suggestion. Rather people made fun on twitter, suggesting how low and cheap the standard of journalism in this country has come down to.

Probably now people won’t say the same, as The Guardian, one of the best newspapers in this country, now reports that Brazilian sensation Neymar has told Manchester United that he is open to joining the Red Devils from Barcelona.

According to the report, to quote the exact phrase “United are attempting to land the Brazilian before 1 September” but at the same time the club understand that the transfer is unlikely to occur before the current window closes. United have a long term transfer plans for Neymar, with the club believe the transfer may be likely next summer.

Neymar is a proven world class talent. He is an integral member of the Barcelona side and yet there are suggestions that United could prise him away from the Catalan club. According to the sources close to the forward, the 23-year-old Brazilian would consider joining, as he is attracted by United’s history and the chance to play in the Premier League.

Luis Enrique was asked to comment on Neymar’s future after Barcelona began their La Liga title defence with a 1-0 victory over Athletic Bilbao. “It doesn’t interest me to talk about rumours, nor these types of situations,” said the Barca manager.

We have seen in this transfer window that Manchester United have been used by top players to secure a fat contract from their respective clubs. The likes of Dani Alves, Thomas Muller and Sergio Ramos, are burning examples to that view. Is Neymar applying a similar strategy here?
