Manchester United pawn off Heinze to Real Madrid

Written by Ahmed Bilal

Gabriel Heinze - now at Real Madrid

In what is becoming a worrying trend, Gabriel Heinze becomes the 3rd Manchester United player in recent memory to move to Real Madrid after falling out with manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

And as such things have gone in the past, the player has gone for a cut-price deal, with Manchester United getting less than the 6.8m offered by Liverpool. Like I’d said earlier, Heinze chose to ignore any advances from France and once it was clear that Real Madrid were after him, Manchester United were quick to agree to a move and thrash out the details.

Heinze will be one of those few players who will not be warmly welcomed back at Old Trafford despite having been a fan favourite for so long. Some say that it was his desire to leave Manchester United. Others point to his desire to move to Liverpool.

I think both could have been forgiven, if he hadn’t taken this matter to arbitration. He claimed that he was defending his ‘rights’ but in reality he was burning bridges and showing Ferguson and his Manchester United teammates that he would not accept staying.

Why’d he want to leave? Was it the whole ‘first-choice’ thing? If that’s true, then I think Ferguson made a mistake last season by not playing Heinze more (although he did get plenty of games). However, all of this is in the past, Heinze is now gone and Manchester United must look forward to the Tottenham game, and plan to win it (more on that on our Friday preview).

As for Real Madrid - congratulations on signing a fine player - Heinze will add a real bite to your squad, something that might have been missing from the defence.

A question for Real Madrid fans though (you guys know who you are): Do you think that with Heinze and Robben, Real Madrid now have the squad depth to defend their title? The biggest unknown for me at this point in the manager, but apart from that if they don’t have a balanced squad then they’re going to start off on the back foot, aren’t they?

So what do you guys think? Comments are welcome.

  1. Every source I’ve seen has said that he hasn’t gone for anything less than the asking price.

Admittedly, I wouldn’t expect more than a pint of lager and a packet of crisps for him.

    Good Riddance

  3. I’ve read he’s actually gone for more than the asking price. Which would be right in line with the inflated transfer fees and inexplicable expenses that Calderon incurs with what ISNT his money.

  4. I read that on the Guardian, so my apologies if I got that wrong.

AVRV, you’ve got a link confirming Heinze’s price?

  5. bbc reports 8 million

  6. yup apparently he has gone for something like 8 million pounds. i really think reinvesting that into a striker would be the best solution for the team as a whole. Im glad he has gone, anyone who doesnt want to wear the red of united is fucked in the head, and i wouldnt want to see him step foot in Old Trafford again.

  7. Surprising, considering that Liverpool were offering 6.8m and we only turned it down because it was Liverpool.

  8. A bit ridiculous, that West Ham rumour - Heinze wasn’t going to a non-CL club ever :)

In other news, Saha might return on the weekend…I doubt if Fergie trusts him anymore though. Oh, to rub Fergie’s face in it for choosing Saha over Ruud :)

  9. @A - Just a thought… what do you think about Robinho as a striker for United?

  10. He’s got flair, skill and pace. Would be great for any team, except us. We dont need him. We need a relatively tall, good heading, target man who rooney and tevez can play off, and knows where the back of the net is. Players like Toni, Iaquinta, Carew, and i would even take a leap of faith and say Raul. He has a great goal scoring record, experience second to none, and would bring in a lot of revenue. Add to that he is only 29 i think. Could easily get a few good years out of him. I dont know too much about Huntelaar or Alfonso Alves, but their goal scoring records are impressive and players from PSV have done well for us. Either that or we go way off and head to south america and get us some unknown gem of a player. But i still think Anelka would fit the bill perfectly.

I don’t agree with the analysis of Fergie ben wrong to chose EVRA ahead of him, we stood by Heinze when he was injured, he should have show the character to fight for his place back as opposed to chosing move to Liverpool. As for the Ruud comments…..what did we win while Ruud was here???

In Fergie’s defense, Heinze did stink up the joint a couple of times last season…Well maybe that’s not entirely true, but he didn’t exactly light the team on fire at his return. And whilst Evra’s not the best left back in the world if he can work with the others in the back four like he did throughout the second third of last season I’m sure he’ll be fine.

  14. Oh, come on, Utd don’t need a striker, or any new players for that matter. You don’t really think that a big name should be signed to come in for Rooney for 7 weeks? And what when he returns? No need for that, there are plenty of players around already. And Anelka, the player who has played for Arsenal, L’pool and Man City? One word: NO! As for Heinze, up until a few days ago he was one of my favourite players, but from now on he’ll be nothing to me but a money-grabbing foreign mercenary. Wanting to leave is one thing, but even thinking of moving to the Scum is high treason, let alone taking legal action. Bastard. I hope he ends up as understudy to Drenthe.

So long Gaby and thanks for the way you played when your wore the Utd shirt. We lose a really good defender and we have got 8 mill so lets sell Silvestre and use the money to pry Lahm away from Germany.

  16. 23/08/2007 Just1n

Philip Lahm ….. he is all we need.

    Cinciho??

Calderon is a clown of the highest order.

  19. Real lose both to Atletico this year. H and A.

  20. 23/08/2007 Liverpool_Fan

They’ve got the wee magican with them (luis garcia :) ) hope they qualify for the champo league so we can play them!

  21. “Liverpool_Fan”, I get the feeling you are always on booze. I know Carlsberg are your sponsors but dont have to be too faithful to them.

Cicinho is a Right Back and not a Left Back like Heinze. Liverpool were planning to play Heinze on the right werent you??? And we at Chelsea want to play Gerrard as goalkeeper, hell Carlsberg is getting to me too….

  22. 24/08/2007 KingOfZamunda

8 million he went for so no cut-price deal.
And Ahmed Bilal, please get over this whole ‘he would’ve been forgiven’ and this air of feeling sorry that he’s gone- he made a decision to leave, made a decision to leave for a club he knew all along area a no-go for both United and his adoring fans and to say that Fergie made a mistake in not playing him last season but should’ve done just so as not to lose him the following season? It smacks of bully boy tactics- the manager decides who plays on the basis of what they’re bringing to the team here and now- not whether or not they’ll go off on a stinker and throw their dummy out of the pram crying for a move to The Dippers next season. It’s like managing with a constant look over your shoulder shitting bricks every five minutes over your crown jewels.
    Real poor argument.
