Hargreaves is a good player and he and carrick would add depth and poise to united’s midfield but the fact remains that united are faceless at the moment without a titan like keane or a tailsman like cantona.

De_Roiste – thanks mate, but I don’t trust those sources. Unless a broadsheet (or even the Sun) reports the rumour, I’m not jumping.

Red17 – you idiot, I’m a United fan. Yes, a lot of what I said is opinion, and it makes sense (the other option is that Rooney’s got a very mature head, more mature than people twice his age). If you don’t like it, your choice

Oh yes, the credit does go to Ferguson for picking Ben Foster. My point is that what Ferguson is doing right now is testing out a lot of options, and hopefully that will work out, but if it doesn’t, we’re back to square one.

About Diarra (and us waiting on Senna) – that’s all over the news mate.

Talking of “baseless reporting” – don’t you think your own reporting smacks of it. You talk about Fergie having a hand in Rooney’s statement about Ronaldo, care to reveal your sources or is this an attempt to pass your opinion as the unvarnished truth. Then you go on to talk about Senna’s deal being held up because of nited’s reported interest in Diarra, which you conclude is probable – is it because it dovetails nicely with your “theory”? Else, do you have some basis for it.

As regards the goalkeeping situation, do you have some concrete alternatives to offer? Or is your idea perhaps to dip into the transfer market when VDS decides to call it a day? Would there be a suitable replacement available then for a reasonable price.

Or perhaps we can try to hedge our bets by giving a couple of young promising keepers the best possible chance of making it by giving them Premiership experience outside the pressure cooker that is Old Trafford. And perhaps if that fail – then we dip into the transfer market. Oops..Wait a minute – isn’t that what Fergie is doing?

We really should be giving credit to Fergie et al for uncovering the gem that is Foster, for a bargain a season ago and now for having the vision & courage to send Foster & Howard out on loan when the very easy option is to keep one or both of them as backup to VDS. And if indeed the Kuszczak deal is a season long loan with an option to sign permanently – then for his (or Gill’s) shrewdness to conclude such a bargain of a deal. About Steele & McShane – young & promising as they are, let’s face it – they are a long shot to make it at United, mainly due to the queue.

You can’t fault Sir Alex for trying to fill the gap soon to be left by van der Sar.

Hopefully we can now focus on the ‘real’ transfer targets, to make up for the fairly lacklustre (bar Carrick, of course) summer we’ve had to endure.

Just a world-class midfield ball winner and a deadly striker – it’s not much to ask, is it?
