Manchester United New Kit – A Slight Modification
Last Friday Manchester United unveiled their new kit for the 2006/2007 season.
Like all kits, this one is bound to grow on you after a while. The colors are fine as well – although the images show off the kit as being a slight orange, clips from Manchester United’s pre-season matches in South Africa show that the kit is still a nice red, albeit not as rich as last season.
But what if you could, for one day, change the kit and try to make it look less ugly?
Rob Hannett, from Firebrand (design consultants based in the UK) was kind enough to send me an edited copy of the original kit design. See if you can spot the differences, and then let me and Rob know in the comments section which kit design you like the most.
Disclaimer: This is not an official redesign, just some mucking about in Photoshop by Manchester United fans who are not too fond of the AIG logo and the big white backdrop for the United crest. Please don’t ask me where to order the redesigned kit from
Ok, got all that? Now for the Manchester United kit pics (old and new):

The original Manchester United 2006/2008 kit as unveiled by the club last friday.

A alternate design for the Manchester United 2006/2008 kit by Rob Hannett – can you guess the changes (apart from the new AIG logo, there’s one more change)?
So what do you guys think? Which one is better?

Sorry to say it, but I prefer the original! The suggested new design for the AIG logo is so 1990′s. I’m not the biggest fan of the AIG logo as it stands, but at least it’s quite simple and comtemporary in it’s design. The smaller crest may be an improvement, but I’m guessing the large crest design is trying to stay true to the original retro design.
Anyway, let’s just think ourselves very lucky we never ended up with ‘Yahoo!’ printed across the front of our beloved red shirt as nearly happened a few years ago! Or even worse … we could have had Mansion Casino’s this year! How tacky would that have been!? Did anyone check out their logo when it was been suggested they would sponsor us?? It’s aweful!
July 19th, 2006 @ 13:17I reckon the second difference is the colour. The version with the new AIG logo is a lighter red.
I think the logo looks too small on the second one too.
July 19th, 2006 @ 13:19the man u logo is smaller, thats the worst part of the design, the badge on a white background, looks very undesigned… apprt from that, i like it
July 19th, 2006 @ 13:34wow i’d reckon the 2nd design is easier on the eye… and the aig looks better than when it was boxed up plus the man utd logo looks the same size to me, its just that the main white badge around it is smaller looks cooler…
July 19th, 2006 @ 13:54The second one is a lot better
July 19th, 2006 @ 14:56So, basically what you’re saying is, you want a multi national company to change the logo of their company, so it looks better on Manchester Uniteds shirt.
Not everything centres around us, the company has probably had the logo like that for years. And to be honest, i dont care what the logo looks like, its bringing us in some cash. You cant honestly tell me you thought it looked good when we had sharp viewcam written on our shirts, can you?
July 19th, 2006 @ 16:01there’s less white around the logo, a huge improvement imho.
July 19th, 2006 @ 16:03is the new kit only for one season ?
thanx..
July 19th, 2006 @ 16:08the difference is clear, you need to learn how to use photoshop properly.
oh and the kits still look shit, the badge needs “football club” on it for a start
July 19th, 2006 @ 16:14“You cant honestly tell me you thought it looked good when we had sharp viewcam written on our shirts, can you?”
It looked ok.
The AIG logo looks terrible. I’m not even sure I would call it a logo. Just a bunch of letters in a box. But it doesnt matter as long as its bringing much needed money in.
July 19th, 2006 @ 17:25FIrst of all i think the kit is nice and looks a worthy tribute to busby babes. But the second design looks better .The proportion of space taken by AIG is little big in the first kit. The design of AIG in the second shirt is better. But i suppose it wont be amended so lets get used to the first design.
July 19th, 2006 @ 18:12i prefer the second one a lot better. the aig sign is much more mordern than the first what is the diffrence with them except for the aig???
July 19th, 2006 @ 21:04Just an FC United of Manchester shirt copy… but you’ll look like a billboard wearing it..
July 20th, 2006 @ 02:53I’ll have to agree with most that the original AIG logo looks kinda awful. but don’t you think it suits the whole retro ‘feel’ alot better (than the modified one)? same goes for the bigger white badge background. good try though. i love the MUFC touch at the bottom. but i still miss the good o’ SHARP days. oh well~
July 20th, 2006 @ 11:50I think both are awful. we’ve not had a decent kit since the first nike one.
don’t like the colour, the gold detailing on the shoulders, the sponsor and the collar is far too small. if it was really a retro shirt it would have a much bigger v-neck – like the chelsea one of a couple of years ago.
July 20th, 2006 @ 15:18I think the original looks better.
Although i’m not the biggest fan of the AIG logo, the deal does say that it will feature ‘prominently on Manchester United shirts..”, and what do you know? it does!! I think because AIG isn’t instantly recognisable as to who the company is, it probably needs to be that big to get people to notice it and ask the question…who are AIG and what do they do? – if they don’t already know. Good marketing if this is tha case. Also the fact that it is big, as someone mentioned earlier, suits the retro look, along with the larger crest/emblem. Besides – United are getting 56.5m over 4 years for having it there!
I think the kit design itself is the best we’ve had in years! it’s far better than last season’s one anyways! i’m sure we’ll all get used to it!
July 20th, 2006 @ 16:24i think the original one looks better the crest is bigger and it looks better than the other one because the other is too plain
July 20th, 2006 @ 18:47The second one is much better, unfortunately thats not for sale. On the original the AIG logo is horrific in design terms. it just doesnt look cool at all. I certainly wont be buying anymore united tops while that logo stays as it is and the badge on a massive white background eeeuuurrrgghhhh! Sorry united But this is crap!
July 22nd, 2006 @ 21:18I think the design is crap though its a good try to pay tribute to the Busby Babes. Its got the desired retro feel and i guess it will be a unique kit in the premiership. the AIG logo is just too loud but i guess money talks “its all about the benjamins babie”
July 25th, 2006 @ 20:44when i first saw the kit i thought it was disgusting but it has grown on me and i do want to buy it now i carnt belive that vodaphone have ended there contract 2 years early
July 29th, 2006 @ 21:36i really like the t-shirt, shame Ruud couldn’t wear it because hes move to Real Madrid.
July 29th, 2006 @ 22:51I think the 1st one looks too old fashioned and dull. I am a life time United fan and the kit is a real disappointment to me. I will not be buying it and look forward to 2008 when the new one comes out!!
July 31st, 2006 @ 21:59hey i like the new manchester united strip, it commemorates the success tht basicly started manchesters trip to the top, and so what it does look less apealing than the strip from the 05/06 campaign but should we really be judging the team we admire by the clothes they are wearing? its not how they look on the field that matters its what they do on the field, this is just one fans opinion however but i do thnk there is something to thnk about in my view. p.s the differences are obviosuly the aig logo and the white shield around the crest has been reduced.
August 1st, 2006 @ 00:17This kit is crap- it looks crap – but good try with the hole retro thing ! But Aig thanks fot supporting manchester United -
August 2nd, 2006 @ 01:30i dont like either actually its better we stay without like barca. cant wait for next unveiling.
August 30th, 2006 @ 19:28the kit isn’t for 06/08 its for 06/07 we get a new one next season it was a special kit to mark the 50th anniversery of the busby babes first title i think the official design is well nice the nicest kit we have had since 97 whats the matter with u all
April 3rd, 2007 @ 17:31sorry but I prefer the original and mark pickering-I like the mansion logo!
April 5th, 2007 @ 00:57the 2nd one looks crap
April 18th, 2007 @ 15:18original is betta
bt i hope we go more modern nxt year cos id h8 2 hav another retro style shirt
i think that the second one is better as it is easier to see the sponsor logo!!! i think that we should keep the newer one for atleast three years not one!!!!!!!!!!!!
April 22nd, 2007 @ 00:49ears….united aint had football club on ther badge for years
April 24th, 2007 @ 23:35This would have been our best kit in a long while had we not had any logo on it(like a barcelona kit)! the logo make the shirt look really budget, like a tacky sponsor to a division 2 league team, though i have to say it has grown on me since the begining of the season!
April 28th, 2007 @ 19:08for everyone who’s asking how long they’ll have this kit, go read the top. It says “This is not an official redesign, just some mucking about in Photoshop by Manchester United fans who are not too fond of the AIG logo and the big white backdrop for the United crest. Please don’t ask me where to order the redesigned kit from” THE SECOND THING IS THE CREST SIZE
May 10th, 2007 @ 01:04I’m a very passionate Man United fan and I think the original is far better, the smaller badge and new AIG shape is not up tn the clubs standards.A new kit for next season would be nice though.
May 11th, 2007 @ 20:05i think they both look better than an they have ever had especially the sharp
May 13th, 2007 @ 23:29man u ur kits r so bad but the thing is that U R THE CHAMPIONS kits don’t matter football matter
May 15th, 2007 @ 12:17i think the second one looks better because it doesnt make the shirt look too plain, however it still seems too plain and the second one looks worst. But the one good thing about the second one is that the sponsor design looks more modern than the frist… But is would say that the previous kits looked better!….arron wrote tha…amy just put her name on 4 fun of it =]
May 15th, 2007 @ 18:12i think its the colour x
May 18th, 2007 @ 19:31yo ears, comment no.9, “the badge needs “football club†on it for a start” – do you not realize united don’t have ‘football club’ on their badge these days?? haven’t done for about the last five years.
May 18th, 2007 @ 23:45i like the new kit
May 21st, 2007 @ 17:45hi , i love the new shirt its a lighter red on the differences and is there a new Away shirt and best of look again for next season come on YOU DEVILS
May 25th, 2007 @ 20:22the other diference is the badge and i like the new kit
May 26th, 2007 @ 20:18there is no difference between the first 1 nd second 1 apart for the AIG logo and the first 1 is better than the second one because the sencond 1 looks blank and it says there is 1 more change but we cant see it !!!!
May 28th, 2007 @ 03:04Ryan:I think the new strip is too original and need to be polished up the AIG logo is to old fashiond for my liking i think manchester united should use a totally new design
Matthew:Its totally crap and need some work they have just spent loads of money on the EXCACT same top but just changed the LOGO !!!
May 28th, 2007 @ 18:38i think that man united need to change everything on the shirt.last season they won the premiership so they need to come out with a fresh kit for a frsh, better more dangerous united.but i will still wear it with ronaldo no7 on he back
COME ON U REDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
May 28th, 2007 @ 20:47mu fuck and chelsea win pundek !
May 30th, 2007 @ 20:48i like the kit but the logo is a bit to small !!!!!!!!!
united till i die !!!!
May 30th, 2007 @ 21:08the 2nd 1 is obviously a fake !
May 31st, 2007 @ 15:38its the same no diferent but no offense its uglier
June 1st, 2007 @ 01:48dis aint da real top dat they will be usin next season, the new one is lush.even if we hadto have dat kit i dont like it but ill wear it to show my team dat i luv dem, so if u dont like da kit dont worry because because there not gonna actually wear it its just da kit to mark the 50th anniversary. SO DONT WORRY ps. our new ones suppost to be da best one we had since 1997.
June 1st, 2007 @ 01:46hello dis aint da real one its just one to mark da 50th anniversary so if u dont like it dont worry

June 5th, 2007 @ 21:33ive just found this 1!!!
June 6th, 2007 @ 08:35http://www.thesoccerblog.org/premiership/man-utd-0708-kit-leaked/
Ged – I think that’s fake.
June 6th, 2007 @ 09:36i think man united have all good kits but i admit the logo should be bigger
COME ON MAN U AND WE WILL WIN THE NEXT FA CUP FINAL
June 6th, 2007 @ 22:56the first one is better but theres not much diffrence between them
June 8th, 2007 @ 17:31I think the 2006/2007 kit is better because it covers more of the top. The new AIG logo is to small. the difference is the background around the logo.
June 9th, 2007 @ 16:17the first is more beautiful than the second!!!!
June 12th, 2007 @ 00:01We think that the away shirt will look well better!!! last seasons home shirt looked crap this is an improvement but i think that the shirt looks to plain!!!
June 13th, 2007 @ 01:55COME ON MAN U!!!!!!!! the best kit on the planet of football!!!!!!

MAN UNITE FOR EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
man u you can do it with new kit i know you can make second treble
June 14th, 2007 @ 07:35U all sound like a bunch of girls – no this is too big … thts too small. who really cares as long as the team plays well. they could wear a bright pink kit and i wouldnt be bothered. just as long as they do us proud like this season. MUFC CHAMPIONS!!!
June 19th, 2007 @ 14:49The 2006/2007 kit looks better than the 2007/2008 kit…..Man U ROX !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
June 19th, 2007 @ 16:40come on this wont be the kit manutd.com havent even piblisised one yet so dont panic…like daley said its not the kit its the team n we’d play brill if tey were runnin round in mini skirts….
June 21st, 2007 @ 00:10the shirt is good but could be better
June 24th, 2007 @ 10:43especially when you have the likes of ronaldo, rooney, nani, anderson and hargreves
and probably that italian bloke and either torres or Klass Jann huntlarr and they might need a good keeper like ochoa from America F.C or Iker Casillas from Real Madrid or laudrea from PSG F.Cand they need to by mortan gamst pederson from blackburn…because it ain’t like they have not got the mone
Do some people on this thread really think that the second shirt is the new one?! Helo, look at the date when the article was written! It’s just some dumbass photoshopping of the old one. Surely you’re not that dumb to think that any new kit would be the same as the old one with a different logo? Be patient, the new United kit will be out in July.
June 24th, 2007 @ 17:18anyway, the new one will have Busby Babes written across the back to mark 50 years since the Munich Air tradgedy
June 25th, 2007 @ 23:36I think both kits look good. I like the style and the material’s better than the last kit. EASILY! Never did like the AIG sign on the original, and i reckon they aint done too badly with this 1.
CANT WAIT TO SEE NANI AND ANDERSON IN THEM.
BRING ON TEVEZ!!!!
June 27th, 2007 @ 17:45I think the badge is smaller but i still like the first one
June 28th, 2007 @ 20:20The new kit doesn’t come out until August and it’s not the one above so will people stop putting up comments thinking that it is.
June 29th, 2007 @ 02:58I like the new kit and like ronaldo for all he as be doing in man u and i know it we are taking the trophy again thois season.am from nigeria and good in the country BARIGA in lagos.
July 17th, 2007 @ 04:32i think that the newe one is pointless they should change the company and the crappy v neck
July 31st, 2007 @ 14:11Nani and Anderson wont ever wear them its the old kit dumbass.
July 31st, 2007 @ 23:07cool
November 4th, 2007 @ 21:46man u can make it to the top we just have to remain focused.cant wait to deal with the duo of chelsea and arsenal.
