Manchester United looking to replace Rio Ferdinand & Nemanja Vidic with Dortmund’s Mats Hummels

Premier League champions Manchester United are reportedly interested in Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels.

The 24-year old made 28 Bundesliga appearances last season, and lead the side to the Champions League final – where they eventually lost 2-1 to Bayern Munich.

Manchester United manager David Moyes is in the market for a long-term replacement for veteran defender Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic, and regards the German international as a top summer priority.

His contract with Dortmund will run until 2017, and the Bundesliga side have no plans to sell, but Moyes is hoping to test their resolve with a bid of around £20M in the coming week.

Mats Hummels signed for Dortmund from title rivals Bayern in 2009 – for £3.5M. He’s gone to make 194 appearances in all competitions, scoring 18 goals.

Rio Ferdinand, 34, made 28 Premier League appearances last season, but is in the autumn of his career. Moyes knows he may only have one of two seasons left and is subsequently looking for a new face to step into his shoes.

Nemanja Vidic will turn 32 this upcoming season, but has suffered from a number of injuries which have kept him out of action for extended periods in the last few years.

With Phil Jones, Chris Smalling, and Johnny Evans, potentially the choices in defence for the future, Moyes wants a player with more European experience to lead from the back.

Hummels seemingly fits the bill perfectly and has won Bundesliga titles with Dortmund in recent years.

No official bid has been made for his services this summer, but Manchester United are expected to step up their interest as the season closes in.

The Lancashire side are yet to make a big signing this summer – after so far failing with bids for Everton left-back Leighton Baines, Everton midfielder Marouane Fellaini, Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fabregas, and Dortmund striker Roberto Lewandowski.
