Manchester United fans had hoped that the Red Devils would make few necessary additions to their squad in the January transfer window. But that wasn’t the case.

Louis van Gaal didn’t want to sign a player for the sake of buying. For the first time since 2005, not a single player had arrived at the club in January, but that didn’t stop United from trying to secure deals for their top targets.

According to reports in Italy, United had a £23m bid rejected for Inter Milan striker Mauro Icardi, who is also a reported target of Chelsea. The Red Devils are likely to return with a better offer for the Argentine, according to Rob Dawson of the Manchester Evening News

Icardi, 22, was the joint top scorer in Serie A last season with 22 goals, but he has struggled this season, managing only 10 in 21 games so far.

United need a clinical finisher in the side as their attack severely lack a cutting edge. Skipper Wayne Rooney is back in form, but he cannot be relied upon for goals. Likewise, Memphis Depay and Anthony Martial are highly talented footballers, but they are inexperienced and are not enough for a club like United that have an ambition of winning league titles and challenging in Europe.

Inter would love to keep Icardi at the club for a long time, but the Nerazzurri do not have the same pulling power like other wealthier European clubs, and it won’t be a big surprise if United or any other heavyweight club were able to snap him up in the future.
