Manchester United can win in Milan

Manchester United can win in Milan

I don’t need to tell you how great last night’s game at Old Trafford was. The early goal, the second-half comeback, Scholesy’s audacious flick – perhaps his only meaningful contribution of the game but what a contribution, Giggsy’s interception and run in injury time that brought back memories of THAT 99 semifinal – except he’s older now and instead of taking on defenders he chose to pass, and Rooney’s straight, low drive to the near post, and the look on his face while shooting told you that that ball was going straight to the back of the net.

There are a lot of things that could have gone differently. United’s backline was missing, there was no Saha in attack, etc etc. Milan had their share of problems too – Inzaghi wasn’t fit, Gattuso got injured, Maldini was taken off at half-time. Milan were away, United were home, the ref gave a couple of strange decisions (but none too controversial). It’s all part of the game (apart from the refereeing decisions, which need to be fixed), and it was good to see both sides move past their problems and focus on the game itself.

Both sides lived up to the expectations of a grand spectacle. Milan showed that they could mix it up with the fastest of them and their ability to control the game and change the pace as necessary is frightening, even if their only really-fast player is Kaka (who is scarily fast). Manchester United proved that their form on the domestic stage can be replicated on the European stage against top opposition even when the chips are down.

Taking a leaf out of ChelseaBlog’s playbook, here’s a look at what was good and bad about last night’s game:

The Good

rooney Manchester United can win in Milan
  • Wayne Rooney – 21 goals this season, not to mention over a dozen assists. For a ‘patchy’ season, he’s chosen the right time to hit form. Fantastic play by him for both the two goals. People who call him a ‘shadow’ striker or a support striker forget that this kid is an amazing finisher – everything that Saha is expected to do (shoot, hold the ball up, move off the ball), Rooney does better. Ruud’s successor? Ladies and Gentlemen, I present to you Wayne Rooney.

Now if only he can put 30 goals away next season icon smile Manchester United can win in Milan

  • Kaka – Two moments of brilliant individual skill are all that separate Milan from crashing out of the Champions League. Without him, I doubt that Milan would have managed any goals.
  • kaka1 Manchester United can win in Milan
  • Heinze and Brown – Yes, Heinze was outpaced by Kaka twice. Yes, Brown was AWOL on both occasions, having camped up front for corners / free kicks both times. But Heinze made some excellent tackles, Brown kept the ship watertight and overall, the makeshift Manchester United defence had a good game. It’s no shame to beaten twice by goals of Kaka’s quality.
  • Nesta – Honorable mention to Maldini, but it was Nesta who did all the hard work. His early tackles on Rooney and his commitment to shackling Ronaldo meant that United’s most trumpeted threat was often isolated and had to rely on team play rather than individual skill. He managed the first goal (that was an own goal, but I’m giving it to Ronaldo), but wasn’t able to stamp his authority on the game, despite being the focus of United’s attacks for most of the game.

Props to Nesta – without him, United could have had done a repeat of the Roma game (hey, you never know…)

  • Giggs – Well, what can you say? He turned it on when United needed him the most, and between him and Scholes these two were key to all 3 goals.
  • The quality of the game – Manchester United’s early European games were scrappy, but against Roma away and home we saw signs that this team had really come together and had the belief to play good football outside the league as well. They proved it last night, going toe-to-toe with one of the best sides in Europe and giving viewers a spectacle to remember.
  • The spirit – despite a couple of contentious decisions and a few hard tackles, there was a healthy respect between both sides, and that’s how it should be. Good to see United players not overawed by the occasion, although I expected more from Carrick.

The Bad

  • Patrice Evra & Michael Carrick – Both players did well, but they were both at fault for the two Kaka goals. You can’t fault them too much, but at this level Carrick should not have stopped running for the first goal, and Evra really should ran towards the goal to put himself between it and Kaka instead of running into Heinze.

    Carrick also missed a sitter.

Other than that, both players had decent games.

  • Gilardino – ineffective and resorted to going down will minimal contact in order to win free kicks for Kaka (who did the same once or twice). It’s not as if Ronaldo doesn’t do the same, or that Rooney sometimes doesn’t make a meal out of challenges, but last night Gilardino was the one doing it the most, and let’s be honest, he wasn’t doing much else icon smile Manchester United can win in Milan

    What a great game!!!

I don’t really want to get into the Ronaldo vs Kaka argument, but for those who claim that Kaka outperformed Ronaldo, to put things into perspective:
I admit Kaka is one of my favourite players and he had a brilliant first half, but, how well did Kaka really perform after his own defence started having problems (after Maldini/Gatusso) and he ended up in a similiar tactical situation as Ronaldo? Imo, even though he still presented a threat, I felt that he drifted out of the game a bit in the second half.

United can win the 2nd leg, but I think we should guard against over-confidence and because of the 2 away goals, to not try to protect a one-goal lead.

    Brilliant game>
had me jumping up from my seat throughout the game.

Its only half-time tho and with the second leg away it could prove to be difficult to win but I have the faith in SAF.

Haha yeah it is true that you pretty much only do a match review when united win but then this is a blog not a news site so you don’t have any obligation to do so.

it would be nice to see a review when united don’t do well but then its your site and you do what you want with it.

It was just a tremendous game with world class players for all to see….and I was exhausted at the end of the game!

Kaka’s goals were just phenomenal – plus he looks like a damn movie star – but what a player.
Nesta has always looked mercurial – and the Italians have always been great footballers.
But credit to the ManU players – particulary in the second half – Heinze played a lot better than people give him credit for – and he worked his socks off for the cause.

Darren Fletcher had a great second half – he was everywhere – and Rooney’s goal was a gutsy wonderful strike – you have to give Rooney credit – he is starting to come through big time – and remember – form is temporary but class is permanent.
With spirit like this – they have to be in with a great chance next week.
One last thing – both teams behaved themselves in such an important game – credit to both teams – we usually just hear about the bad things but the whole game was a sheer joy to watch – so much so I wanted to get my boots out and go out there to play again – but my wife stopped me !!!!

I see a tie, 1-1, 2-2, as the way through for United. Both teams can score and have fight-back ability. United should need to score though. 0-0 looks dangerous going down to the last minutes. With goals in the book, the nature of things changes.

I hope United come out attacking. Ronaldo left a couple of goals in the bag I think and may get his chances at the San Siro.

Also more than a few United players were clumsy with their touches last night (including Rooney who couldnt control anything, but man what a finish!) – with this game behind them, they should be more confident and have less nerves in the 2nd leg.

Milan have been the best team over the last 5 years and are blessed with mid-field talent – it will be a tough match but United have the ability to put them on the back foot and to separate Milan’s midfield from the front.

    Ed,

you know, the good spirit thing really stood out, so did the free flowing game.

bets that tonight won’t be like this? then again, it has a lot to do with how managers approach the game.

sagar – a bit harsh mate :) especially today, you had to try and ruin today, didn’t you? :)

Manu definitely gonna score in the second leg. It’s just the question of whether our defence can hold up or not. Fletcher had another brilliant european outing .Do we need to spend 20 million pounds on hargreaves????

Can someone clarify how the away goals rule works if Milan win 3-2 at the San Siro? The agg would then be 5-5 with both teams on 2 away goals each…

    Penalties?

You get the impression that united will be going for it in the san siro. My money is on united to win by two goals, Milan are a class act but they punished our mistakes.

  18. KOFI AKRASI BOATENG

C.RONALDO IS FAR BETTER A PLAYER THAN KAKA IN SEVERAL INSTANCES AND THERE ARE NO DOUBTS

  19. marius

for boateng – u don’t now nothing about footbal, how can u say ronaldo is better then kaka’? san siro will be hell for united a s##t team

    April 27th, 2007 @ 02:21
  20. Ahmed Bilal

marius – while boateng might not know anything about football (he does know who ronaldo and kaka are, though, so you’re factually incorrect even if you’re figuratively correct), and while in your world hell is full of shit (in my world there is everything you desire in hell, and you get it, too)…

no where does all that say that ronaldo is not better than kaka, or that united are a shit team (i’ll give you that san siro = hell, but that’s a semantic agreement, not a literal one.

so come up with a better argument.

Boateng – you cant compare kaka with ronaldo – very different players.
