Manchester United board now turning against David Moyes

David Moyes is under huge pressure. Players have shown their frustration, the fans have shown their discontentment, and now ESPN reports that key Manchester United boardroom figures have turned against the Scot, with the prospect of him getting sacked becoming more and more of a possibility.

The report claims that Manchester United owners are still behind Moyes, but they’re becoming more and more open to the idea of a change of a manager.

With the club out of all domestic competitions and a top-four finish looking highly unlikely, United’s hope of salvaging something positive out from an otherwise dreadful season rests on their Champions League campaign.

United will have to overturn a 2-0 deficit on Wednesday against Olympiakos, before facing tough Premier League fixtures against West Ham and Manchester City respectively.

ESPN reports that while a victory (and progress to the next round) against Olympiakos would be very well received, a defeat and subsequent poor results in the next two Premier League matches could bring the pressure to breaking point.

Miguel Delany reports that the Glazers have become nervous about the nature of the club’s performances, and that some United officials now openly maintain that a managerial change is needed.

Perhaps most poignantly, Sir Alex Ferguson, who was instrumental in appointing Moyes at the beginning of the season, is reportedly no longer vocally backing the under-fire manager.

Furthermore, financial factors are now proving to be a major hindrance. A number of recently signed-up sponsors and commercial partners have started to feel frustrated, as they specifically came on board due to the reputation of the club.

ESPN also reports that Louis van Gaal would be interested in a potential summer move to Old Trafford, with the Dutch coach less intent on taking the job at White Hart Lane.
