Rio is by far the greatest English defender atm.

I was so pissed last year, when his contract negotiations were on. Not because of Rio, but because of the way the fans treated him. The negotiations weren’t longer than those of many other players, but he was questioned for loyalty, simply because he had been questioned before.

He is the one player, United can’t do without imo, since there’s noone quite like him. Good thing he’s hardly ever injured.

Rio does deserve to get a lot of the credit for our outstanding defensive record! I have been saying for a while now that he is the best candidate for captain whilst Gary Nev is out. No reflection on Giggsy’s status as an elder statesman but Ferdinand has experience as captain, and he seems to thrive on the increased responsibility. I also think that his “increased visibility-more and more interviews” is Fergie’s way of preparing him for eventual succession to G. nev! that you Rio et al…

His little brither Anton looks like he will be better than Rio, when AF gets to his age when Rio was in his prime.

All Anton Ferdi needs is for him to leave to a bigger club, like a top 4, top 6 side.

What was the most encouraging for me was what simpson said after the wigan game. He said rio was constantly talking to him, making him aware of his marking and positioning. That for me shows he is a natural leader and he would make a brilliant captain. Recently Rooney has been given the armband over him, but i think wayne always will be temperamental and is bound to get caught up in useless fights from time to time. I think Rio would make a brilliant captain, and for the plaudits Vida has been getting, Rio has been silently stellar at the back. Good article.

Rio absolutely deserves to become our next captain. His influence in the dressing room and also in interviews has grown lots last 18 months.

He’s everything everyone always proclaims for Terry, minus the stupid disputes with the refs (and bookings) and minus the occasional frustrated self-justice tackle.
And games like yesterday, where he actually was the only defender we needed, make me wonder why Terry and not Rio.

but i completely agree with the article. his tendency for brain farts used to make me wanna bash his head in, but he’s been awesome recently.
