Manchester United manager José Mourinho is apparently unhappy with his defensive options and has already begun his work to improve the defence next summer.

The Portuguese tactician has not been impressed by the likes of Smalling, Blind and Rojo. Full backs Shaw and Darmian have not convinced him either.

As per the reports from Daily Mail, Mourinho is ready to sell his three centre-backs in order to fund a move for German defender Antonio Rudiger. The Roma centre-back is highly rated within the game and was linked with a move to Chelsea in the past. Mail add that Rudiger is still on Chelsea‘s list.

Smalling and Blind were catastrophic against Chelsea earlier this month and Mourinho wants a better partner for his new signing, Eric Bailly. The former Villarreal man is the only defender who has impressed Mourinho this season.

While it is not possible to revamp his side’s defence right away, Mourinho could be looking to bring in reinforcements during January. Daily Mail are claiming that Marcos Rojo and Matteo Darmian could be sold in January transfer window. Although there is no mention of replacements, Mourinho will hardly sanction the sales of two players without signing someone.

Rudiger would be an excellent addition to the United side. The German international can operate as a makeshift right back as well. If the reports are to be believed, Roma are unwilling to sell their top class defender. However, an offer of £35 million could tempt the Serie A club. Manchester United scouts are set to monitor Rudiger extensively between now and the end of the season.
