Steven Gerrard - Liverpool FC

Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini has dropped a massive hint that his side could sign Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard.

The 34-year-old came up through the ranks of the Reds’ youth setup and has spent his entire career at Liverpool. The former England international’s contract at Anfield runs down at the end of the season and the Merseyside club are yet to hand a new deal to the star midfielder.

City signed Frank Lampard on-loan from New York City FC after he was released from his former club Chelsea at the end of the last season. He joined the Major League Soccer side and then returned to the Premier League earlier in the summer.

The Chilean manager is now open to the prospect of signing Gerrard, if he is made available next summer.

“I don’t ever rate players on their age. It depends on the money they cost and the number of years they have (on their contract),” Pellegrini said.

“But, like Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard is a top player and he can continue at a high level for a couple more years.”

Gerrard had earlier revealed that he will continue his club career elsewhere if Liverpool decide not to hand their skipper new deal.

“I can only worry about this season ‘cos I’m only contracted until May. As it stands at the moment, I’m here until the end of the season and want to make the most of it. I certainly won’t be retiring this summer,” Gerrard told the Daily Mail.

“I will play beyond this season. We will have to wait and see if that’s at Liverpool or somewhere else. That’s Liverpool’s decision. If they don’t come then I will see what’s out there.”

Liverpool will hand their skipper a new deal and retain him for the next few years. Gerrard will be allowed to speak to foreign clubs if the Reds fail to tie him down to a new deal before the end of this calendar year.
