Are Manchester City really interested in Barcelona’s Dos Santos?

Earlier this month talked about the possibility of Giovani Dos Santos (#5 on the Top 50 teenagers in football list for 2007 and playing 28 games for Barcelona in all competitions – with 6 starts in the league – this season) moving on from Barcelona. Reports claimed that the top brass were unhappy with his attitude and demands for an improved contract, and with Bojan coming along so well for Barcelona and Messi firmly part of Barcelona’s future, Dos Santos could be shipped out if the right offer came along.

One must remember that most of this transfer speculation is played out in the press without any real impact – surely there are more efficient ways of inviting transfer bids for a player than leaking a rumour to the press – and today a quote from the player’s father in Mexican newspaper El Universal links Dos Santos to Manchester City:

“There is interest from Manchester City. However, I cannot give more information now as Giovani’s agent is the one in charge of all this, it’s he who is dealing with negotiations. I can’t say for sure if Giovani will go to another team. There are still games to play in La Liga and while there are he’s only thinking about Barcelona. We don’t want to get ahead of ourselves, there is interest but first he has to concentrate on Barcelona.”

Now if you add this to the comments coming out of Manchester City about a ‘big name signing’, then the interest would make sense. However, Eriksson specifically talked about an older, established star, and Dos Santos is neither. City could surely use the likes of Dos Santos in their squad, but this whole thing just smells of more fishing by the player’s agent and nothing substantial. Last week’s estimates put a price tag of 10 mil Euros on Dos Santos, and while that would be a bargain for Manchester City, there’s no substantial link and in any case, he’s not the type of player City need at the moment.

Dos Santos is expected to play for Mexico in their friendly against Ghana at Craven Cottage on Wednesday night.
