Why can’t Manchester United score after the 70th minute?

Written by Ahmed Bilal. Tagged: Manchester United

Wenger’s charges pointed to this in the wake of Arsenal’s win over Manchester United, and it’s something that makes for a worrying read, especially if you consider these 5 key matches Manchester United has played this season:

Manchester 0-1 Arsenal - Arsenal scored midway through the second half and United could not make up the difference.

Manchester 1-1 Chelsea - Chelsea equalised in the last 20 mins of the game and Manchester United couldn’t score a second at home, before or after Chelsea’s goal.

Celtic 1-0 Manchester United - Nakamura’s late free-kick, made more painful by the penalty miss and the fact that we couldn’t score late on.

FC Copenhagen 1-0 Manchester United - Again, Manchester United concede late, and can’t claw things back.

Arsenal 2-1 Manchester United - Despite being in the lead, Manchester United went backwards after the 70th minute and couldn’t score for their lives.

See a pattern? In the last 20 games Manchester United has played in the league, we haven’t scored after the 70th minute (but have conceded 4 goals).

When it comes to the crunch games at Anfield and Stamford Bridge, this will have to change.

  1. Bullshit. Man U 2 Aston Villa 1 - Ole’s injury time goal !!???!! Forgotten already?

  2. Because most of the time they are winning comfortably by the 70th.

  3. This is bollocks most of those apart from the chelsea game were all in the last 10 mins epecially the arsenal games something like the 85th min at home and injury time away. If a team scores at that time of a game its very hard to get one back as most teams shut up shop

  4. look at the gravity of the games you have selected. all these matches could have had and possibly still do have huge significance on how our season transpires( this is not the case with the CL games but we didnt know that at the time). in my humble oppinion we show teams like chelsea and arsenal too much respect. most recently against arsenal, we had the opportunity to turn the knife in them and score a second. however, we seemed content to run down the clock and look for the final whistle and invite them to attack us. this kind of attitude can be seen in the constant desire to play 451 away from home in europe. i am of the belief that attack is the best form of defence and with our back 4 looking as solid as they have done for a long time we should be looking to tear teams apart. we have the ability and quality to do it. maybe if we win the premiership this year we will have the belief to do it too.

  5. If you could find this trend, Fergie may have found it too. Wenger is an arse. He made the biggest mistake of his career by letting United now know their own “weakest point”, and Fergie, I’m pretty sure, will definitely looking into this issue with urge.

Though it is a worrying sign, hope the players now know what they have to do in the last 20 minutes. We welcome other managers to point out United weak points so that we can improve and win the league.

  6. Againsnt Arsenal and Celtic the goals were so late, we hardly had a chance to come back from them!!

  7. we scored after 70 minutes against watford(h),charlton(h) and against spurs(a) we scored one after 70 mins all in the league in the last 20 games so this is bullshit!

  8. Looks like its true, against premiership weaker teams,no problem, but when it comes to the big teams and Europe, they do seem to have this problem, luckily though,we are kicking ass nowadays to be bothered by this minor failing…

  14. I had pick more than 5 matches which they they had pick from manutd matches :P it should be more than enough to proof that they cant score more than 2 goal diff? :)

  15. See a pattern? Almost most of the games arsenal and chelsea has played in the league, they are score more than 2 goal diffs :) so call champion? LoL … can only win by a goal diff :P

When it comes to the crunch games at Anfield and Old Trafford, this will have to change.

  16. I kinda agree with this article. I had a conversation with a mate of mine recently and I told him that in order to beat United, the other team just need to make sure that they defend well and that NO ONE SCORES during the first 75minutes. It seems like our team panics when this happens. The tackles become reckless and tempers seems to flare.
Fact is, United is not very good at chasing a game in the last 15-20 minutes.

    Makes sense though…
    1) United’s deadliest weapon is their ‘Counter Attack’. When you’re trailing, this weapon can become neutralised.
    2) United (like any other team) plays best when their “Skill Players” are relaxed and enjoying their game by being allowed a certain ‘freedom to express’. This becomes kinda difficult when they’re under pressure to score an equaliser. They seem to then try too hard.

  17. Are you mad, please check the actim site, almost a third of our goals have come in this period, with the likes of Larsson and Ole as super subs, we will always kill a game off, when we really really need too, Arsenal games don’t count because Henry is on the pitch, and I hate him, love to hate him of course he is fabulous! MAN UTD 1999 again please!!!!!!!!!!
