David De Gea is yet to play a part in Manchester United’s season so far. According to Van Gaal, the player has lost his focus and has refused to play for the club until his future is sorted.

The Spaniard is keen to return to Spain with Real Madrid and has asked his agent to sort out a transfer this summer. Frustrated with his contract situation, De Gea is determined to leave Manchester United this summer.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Schmeichel stated that the situation has not been handled properly and it is a ‘joke’. The former United keeper has asked the club to find a swift resolution to the matter and has urged the former Atletico Madrid keeper to sign a new contract at Old Trafford.

“I’m very thankful for what he has done for Manchester United and I would not hold anything against him if he moves on,” he said.

“But I want the situation resolved because it’s an absolute joke that it has carried on into the season.

“A club like Manchester United, being in a transition period, needed to be ready for the season with every issue resolved and not having two or three still hanging out there.

“Hopefully it gets resolved now.

“I would love David De Gea to commit to Manchester United and sign a new five-year contract. He has been absolutely outstanding in the last two seasons.

“But I also understand when Real Madrid – who are from his home town – when they come calling, of course you want to go back there.

“I want to know – is he with us or someone else? And if he is with someone else I want the manager to have the opportunity to go out and buy another goalkeeper.”

Schmeichel’s claims make a lot of sense and it would be wise for Manchester United to resolve the issue quickly.

The Old Trafford outfit will need time to find a suitable replacement and holding on to the player, only to lose him on deadline day would be a damaging blow for Van Gaal and his side.
