Top-quality Chelsea reject set for £48m return to Premier League

Man City transfer news

Former Chelsea player Kevin De Bruyne is set for a return to the Premier League, after his current club Wolfsburg have agreed to sell for a fee of around £48 million. According to The Guardian, the Belgian’s most likely destination will be the Blues’ arch title rivals Manchester City, who are willing to splash the cash for landing him at the Etihad Stadium.

De Bruye was sold by Chelsea in the January transfer window last year for £18 million, but his market value has grown by leaps and bounds thanks to his performances in the Bundesliga last season. He contributed 16 goals and 27 assists in all competitions as Wolfsburg finished 2nd and won the DFB-Pokal, in the final of which he scored.

Jose Mourinho stated that the 24 year-old didn’t have the patience and character to fight it out for his place at Stamford Bridge, but selling him could be a decision that could come back to haunt the Portuguese. De Bruyne’s goals and assists will be a huge boost to Man City, who struggled to find consistency in their title challenge last year.

This time around, they have spent big on their attackers. If the De Bruyne transfer goes through, they will have shelled out almost £100 million on just two players, after signing Raheem Sterling for £49 million earlier this summer from Liverpool. Both these youngsters have bags and bags of talent and could be superstars if they fulfill their potential under Manuel Pellegrini.

City’s first game of the season is a tricky assignment away at West Bromwich Albion on Monday. It remains to be seen if the deal for De Bruyne goes ahead in time for him to feature at the Hawthorns.
