The 2008/09 UEFA Cup first round draw was conducted today with the first leg to be played on Thursday 18 September 2008 with the second leg to be played on Thursday 2 October 2008.

Five days after the second legs the draw will be held for the group stage, the fixture dates for which are 23 October, 6 November, 27 November, 3/4 December and 17/18 December. The top three from each of the eight groups will be joined by the eight third-placed teams in the UEFA Champions League for the Round of 32 in February, with the eventual aim a place in the final at Istanbul’s Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadium on 20 May.

Plenty of ties to talk about, but at the least I’d expect Spurs and Villa to get through - Everton have a very tough game against Standard Liege (they took Liverpool to extra time in the 2nd leg and with a bit more composure and experience could have been playing in the Champions League instead of the 5-time champions). Napoli are paired against Benfica and Udinese against Borussia Dortmund, two close ties.

Should be interesting this year, what with Milan and Ajax also in the mix for the title.
