Man City could have edge on Newcastle for Blackburn defender

Yesterday, I reported on Blackburn’s interest in a couple of January targets, but today, Blackburn are on the other side of the line, as Newcastle are once again stepping up their interest in Rovers’ left back Stephen Warnock.

Newcastle have been interested in Warnock for some time, and they tried their hardest to snag him in the summer. Blackburn manager Paul Ince was adamant about hanging on to nearly all of his key players in the summer, so the Magpies’ attempts proved to be unsuccessful.

But, defense is still a very pressing need for Newcastle, especially at left back, where Jose Enrique has been worth about 63p rather than £6.3m.

Newcastle might face some competition from Manchester City, who are defensively challenged at the moment. City’s chances could actually be a little better, thanks to the connection between Warnock and his former manager Mark Hughes.

However, anyone’s interest may well be fruitless again, as Ince might not be willing to part with one of his squad’s best players when he needs all the help he can to steer clear of a relegation battle. So Newcastle, City, and any other suitor might have to wait until the summer, when a safe Blackburn could make a sale knowing that they have plenty of time to find and snare a quality replacement for Warnock.
