England international Luke Shaw has revealed that he is thrilled to join Manchester United.

The 18-year-old completed his switch to Old Trafford on Friday as the Red Devils confirmed the signing of the left-back from Southampton. He will take place Alexander Buttner’s place in United squad after the Dutch defender joined Dynamo Moscow earlier this week.

“I am thrilled and excited to be joining Manchester United,” Shaw told the club’s official website after signing for United.

“I have been at Southampton since I was eight years old and I would like to thank them and the fans for everything they have done for me.  I want to continue to progress my career and joining United is the ideal place for me to do that.”

“I am looking forward to this new chapter in my life and also looking forward to learning from the world-class players and management at the club,” the left-back added.

Meanwhile, United’s new assistant manager Ryan Giggs has heaped praise on Shaw and has backed him to be a “top player.”

“Luke is a very talented young left-back with great potential. He has developed immensely during his time at Southampton and has all the attributes to become a top player,” Giggs said.

“I am delighted he has joined Manchester United as I believe this is the right club for him to continue his development as a young player and eventually fulfil that promise.”

Shaw becomes United’s second summer signing after the Old Trafford club met Ander Herrera’s buyout clause to sign him from Athletic Bilbao. The former Saints star’s addition means United will have two left-back’s in the squad after Patrice Evra signed a new one-year deal in May.

The English defender could be a long-term replacement for Shaw at Old Trafford as Evra is set to leave United after the end of the next season.
