Luis Suarez is the only Player of the Year for Rodgers
Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers picks Luis Suarez as the Player of the Year and believes the Uruguayan can inspire his team to finish the season on a high note.
Suarez has been one of the top performers of the season having scored 25 goals already in all competitions, 18 of them have come in the league and one of the major contenders for the Player of the Year award along with Manchester United’s Robin van Persie and Tottenham’s Gareth Bale.
However, it is not only the goals for which he is getting huge adulation, but the former Ajax star has created opportunities for his team mates too. He has created 12 clear-cut chances from open plays for his team mates while the blame for a modest tally of four assists can largely be put down to poor finishing from his team mates.
Luis Suarez will start his 90th match for the Reds against Wigan and is just two goals short of becoming the first Liverpool player to score 20 goals in the Premier League since Fernando Torres hit the magic figure five seasons ago.
Rodgers ushering heaps of praise on Suarez, said when asked to pick any one name for the Player of the Year, as quoted in The Independent:
“I couldn’t look much further than Luis Suarez. He has been phenomenal – that is not just an opinion as his manager.
“This is a guy who had to play alone up front because he was the only striker we had for nearly six months and never missed a day’s training and played every minute of every game.
“He has been absolutely outstanding.”
While Suarez was equally good in creating chances last season, what has made a huge difference to his game and for the team is his clinical finishing. Though he is still accused of failing to convert gild-edged chances too often, but never-the-less he has improved a lot on the scoring department.
He scored just 16 goals in his first 45 appearances whereas in his last 44 outings, he bagged 30 goals, almost doubling the rate of scoring.
The goal scoring burden of Luis Suarez has been shared by fellow striker Daniel Sturridge, who joined in January for £12 million from Chelsea and has already bagged four goals in five league appearances for the club.
