For a while it seemed like Manchester United had lost all interest in Portugal midfielder William Carvalho. Readers of Soccerlens might be knowing that we have covered this saga extensively, and you only need to google it to find plethora of articles written by us throughout the past one year.

The interest in the 22-year-old highly rated defensive midfielder intensified under former United manager David Moyes. United scouts had watched him for umpteenth times last season and needless to say they were pretty impressed as well. After all, this is about a player, who is arguably the best midfielder in the Portuguese league by a country mile.

Following the appointment of new manager Louis van Gaal that interest somewhat had died down. However, recently the interest have been rekindled after Sporting hinted the midfielder could leave the club this summer

It was reported earlier this month that Manchester United’s representatives were in Portugal to conclude a deal for the €45m midfield sensation.

“It’s not like the old days when players left Sporting at any price. We are not concerned with William Carvalho because we have alternatives, who will want to play as well,” said Sporting’s director of football Augusto Ignacio.

“The termination clause ensures a great deal to Sporting. I am very pleased with the negotiations.”

“It is not easy to negotiate for players, you need to be very shrewd but Sporting have a president who knows how to negotiate with anyone and what is best for the club,” Sporting chief added.

Now A Bola today reports that Louis van Gaal has urged the United hierarchy to sign Carvalho, though it remains to be seen whether they meet the player’s €45m buy-out clause or not.
