mullerManchester United have made signing Bayern Munich star Thomas Muller a priority this summer.

According to the German newspaper Bild, incoming United manager Louis van Gaal has informed the club’s chief executive Ed Woodward that he wants the German international at Old Trafford next season.

The Premier League giants have already made contact with the Bundesliga champions over the availability of Muller two weeks ago. Now the Red Devils want to seal a deal for the forward, who came up through the Bavarian club’s youth setup.

Muller has been an integral figure in Bayern’s starting lineup in recent times and is one of their key players in their recent success in the last two years. The 24-year-old’s future at the Allianz Arena remains unclear and the forward has publicly expressed his desire to have more clarification on whether his services are required for his current employers next season.

“I have reached the point where I want to know if I am an essential component of the Bayern Munich first XI for the new season and if the club has plans for me over the coming years,” Müller told the German magazine Stern.

“That’s why I will be out to have a meeting. I am not the type of guy that says: ‘All right, I have played a good part and will keep my mouth shut and everyone else is able to do with me whatever he wants.’

“As a Munich boy your test at Bayern Munich is always a bit tougher, but we [players from the youth academy] are the grassroots of this club,” he added.

United already have attacking players in their squad, which includes the likes of Wayne Rooney, Juan Mata, Adnan Januzaj and Shinji Kagawa. Van Gaal’s has closely worked with Muller while the two were at Bayern and the German forward excelled under the Dutchman.

Should United tempt Muller join Van Gaal at Old Trafford, he could leave his current employers if his situation is not sorted as quickly as possible.
