vangaalManchester United manager Louis van Gaal has expressed his desire that he wants the Red Devils to win the league this season.

The 20-times English champions finished seventh in the league last season under David Moyes and the Scot was sacked just 10 months into his six-year long contract. The former Everton manager was replaced by the Dutchman earlier in the summer.

United chief executive had earlier informed Van Gaal that this season’s target is to finish in top three and return to the Champions League next campaign. However, the former Barcelona and Bayern Munich now has other ideas as he targets league title in his debut season.

The Old Trafford club are third in the table with 32 points from 17 games, 10 points behind league leaders Chelsea.

“The best achievement is to be champions because our goal is still to be champions at the end of the season, that’s also the best result. We are looking in a football world where No.1 is the most important thing,” the Manchester Evening news reported Van Gaal as saying.

“Our goal is to be first. But it’s not always so easy, you can see that. That’s why the board have said that our goal is within the first four places. But with my players and all the staff, we are trying to achieve more than they expect from us.”

“In the Netherlands and also in Germany you have the Christmas champions but that doesn’t count at the end of May or June, that’s when you have to be first.”

“In Holland and Germany we have a Christmas champion. PSV and Bayern Munich are the Christmas champions. It’s better to be the Christmas champions then the possibility you shall be next champion is bigger, but not certain,” United manager concluded.
