Is This Liverpool’s Goalkeeper for Next Season?

Liverpool are considering a move for Club Bruges and Australia number one Matthew Ryan in the summer.

Chris Boscombe of the Telegraph has reported that Brendan Rodgers has sent a scout to watch the highly-rated 22-year old in action as the Reds go in search of a new goalkeeper.

Brendan Rodgers has had problems between the posts this season with Simon Mignolet being at fault for a number of goals this season and backup Brad Jones not doing any better in the few games he got before picking up an injury last month.

The short-sleeve wearing Ryan is tipped as a star for the future and has been a regular for Club Bruges over the past two-and-a-half seasons in the Belgian Jupiler League.

Mathew Ryan was his country’s first choice at last summer’s World Cup and has 15 caps at senior level.

The report states that Brendan Rodgers has sent scouts to track his progress but that Liverpool will not make a move for the young goalkeeper this month.  However, Chris Boscombe does state “a potential summer move is under discussion”.

Club Bruges’ former sporting director Arnar Grétarsson expects the goalkeeper to make a move to one of Europe’s top leagues sooner rather than later, saying:

“I don’t see him staying for much longer at Club Bruges. I think he will move to a bigger team, possibly for next season.

“I know he would like to go to the Premier League, everybody wants to play in that league, but I could also see him in the Primera Division or the Bundesliga. He definitely has the quality to play in the big three leagues.”

Liverpool have also been linked with a move for Chelsea’s Petr Čech in the summer as it appears that Simon Mignolet is not in Brendan Rodgers’ long-term plans.
