Why Liverpool will not win the Premier League, again

Written by Guest Authors. Tagged: Liverpool

In the last two years, Liverpool have won two cups, England’s and Europe’s most prestigious ones…and yet, I still feel that there fans would be dissapointed at their league rankings, and even Stevie G has been quoted as saying he would’ve traded them in for the League.

Now, I don’t think Liverpool will win the EPL in this season, or even the next. Here’s why…

Put simply, they run far too hot and cold. Let’s look at their last two games in these competitions. In the EPL, at home, they struggled to break down a Spurs team which is very much struggling and would’ve gone behind had Jenas not missed a sitter. In the second half, Liverpool were irresistible, and Gerrard and Alonso, who had been murdered by Zokora and Murphy started playing the beautiful passing game we know that they can. 3-0.

Against Galatasaray, it was the opposite, superb in the first half but then took a turn for rubbish in the second, and almost gave away a game in which they looked much better. 3-2

Now, my point is… In cups you play far less games, and running hot and cold can pay off, but in the league, you need to put in the boring, but solid performances which Man U and Chelsea do. Let’s take a look at certain parts of their squad today and you’ll see what I mean, if you don’t already.

In CB, Liverpool are torn between three, and unless Benitez decides which two are his best quick, I can’t see them putting in the solid defensive performances they were known for 2 and 3 years ago. Now let’s look at three of the players Liverpool brought in during the transfer period:

Craig Bellamy: Showed his undoubtable skill at Blackburn but his record is much publicised and he will not score goals for long periods.

Jermaine Pennant: young and spirited but also with a slightly dodgy past and form will bounce.

Dirk Kuyt: obviously an extremely qualified forward, but runs hot and cold for Holland, so the jury is still out.

Until Liverpool produce the Terry’s and Lampard’s of Chelsea and the Ferdinand’s and Scholes of Man U, they will not win the EPL.

Ed: You’ve heard him, now let him have the ‘proper’ welcome that he deserves :)

  1. Write about your own team, muppet!

  2. I just got a LAUGH.. Are you stupid? Learn fotball plz!
WE HAVE PRODUSED Jamie Carragher and Steven Gerrard!
Two players who are 10 times better then those newbs that you writed down there.
Chelsea have not prodused Lampard! West Ham! Manu has`nt prodused Ferdinand, WEST HAM has done that job to!
I cry for you, how little skills you got.
And Craig Bellamy dont score goals? Did you follow him last year on Blackburn?

  3. I hope you are not a fan, Liverpool can do without fans like yourself. Leave the thinking work to Rafa, after all he has a proven track record.
Although they are blowing hot and cold, it is my belief we are about to put in a consistent run of form and we can better the Lampard’s and Terry’s, we after tall have Gerrard, Kuit and Carragher, who performs consistent week in and week out. The current group of players needs a little time.
But let us wait until the end of the season and keep supporting Rafa and his team.

  4. This is the stupidest comment I’ve ever read. Doesn’t Liverpool have Gerrard and Carra? And, do you actually think that Terry and Lampard won their club the honors? Come on, get a life.

  5. September 29, 2006SoccerLens Ed: is a bitter chelsea prick

Why Man Utd will not win the Premier League, again!!

Darren Fletcher: young and spirited but not any good and form will bounce.

Michael Carrick: Poor-mans Xabi Alonso, £18m is £14m to much, cant tackle, cant score and not the passer people think he is.

Alan Smith: cant play upfront and cant play in midfield.

Now, I don’t think Man Utd will win the EPL in this season, or even the next. Here’s why…

Put simply, they run far too hot and cold, against the poor teams they look ok but aginst Arsenal they where poor and same against Spurs and should have lost the CL game.

Until Man Utd produce the Terry’s and Lampard’s of Chelsea and the Gerrard’s and Carragher’s of Liverpool, they will not win the EPL again.

one of the worst researched “blogs” I have ever read.

The writer of the article is missing some key facts. Inlcuding, and not limited to, the fact that Liverpool had a record number of clean sheets last season, improving their defensive record from the season before. Hardly the 2 or 3 years ago the writer refers to.

Chelsea did not “produce” Frank Lampard - and has the writer decided to “forget” his international performances, whilst making clean references to Kuyts form for Holland? Lest not forget that Kuyt is played out of formation for Holland - whats Lampards excuse?

Liverpool have “produced” Carragher and Gerrard, equal and better to John Terry and Frank Lampard.

As for the remark about Scholes - ridiculous.

I suggest this article writer spends his time reseaching fact rather than typing complete and utter rubbish.

  7. Who are the Scholes and ferdinands?

Please get to know that both steve G and jammie Carragher rein in EPL and not Scholes and that UGLY Ferdinand.

  8. By saying we requrie the “Terry’s and Lampard’s of Chelsea and the Ferdinand’s and Scholes of Man U” does this mean you don’t rate Stevie G and Jamie Carragher of Liverpool FC? Our two a far better than Man Utd’s and Stevie is far superior to Lampard!

  9. I’m calling the truancy police. The school bell hasn’t rung yet.

  10. Iv’e not heard such a load of rubbish in ages. Carragher, and Gerrard are the equal (if not better) than Lampard, and Terry, and definitely better than Scholes (past it), and Ferdinand. Liverpool are trying to gel a team with a fair few new players at the moment which is why performances are inconsistant. Even so, they will beat most teams, and when they click they will push Chelsea all the way.

  11. WEll,
interesting you say we need the terry’s and lampard’s of chelsea and ferdinand’s and scholes of man usa, so let me get this straight we need a fat midfielder who can only score goals from penalty spots and via deflections and only looks good to the english media because he’s english, plays with world class midfielders who make him look good? or maybe we need a defender who forgets his drug tests and gets banned for most of the season, or we need a midfielder who can’t see where the goal is, come on give us a break we have gerrard (superman) carragher, alonso, sissoko, hypia, riise, kuyt, crouch, bellamy etc, you saying this lot can’t win the league? then my friend you must be a netball supporter, and watching a differnet EPL to the rest of us.

  12. Aaaaah, I love a good controversial Friday :)

What’s interesting to note is that while the writer gets his basic argument right (Liverpool are inconsistent and will not win the Premier League this year), his opinions on the players that have been bought and the comparison with Chelsea and Man Utd basically brought the house down on him, regardless of the merits of the initial argument.

Scholes can still turn it on (people forget that Gerrard has his off-days as well) and while the age factor will always favour Gerrard, comparing Scholes and Gerrard is once again pointless because Gerrard is an all-round player while Scholes has played, much like Lampard, in a very specific role all his life.

Comparing Lampard to Gerrard is even worse. It’s a sore point for Liverpool fans, so I’m not surprised that they stop seeing reason after that one.

Carragher is very highly rated by Liverpool fans just as Ferdinand is by United fans. I’d say on talent alone Ferdinand shades it, although in terms of commitment Terry takes the plaudits (along with Gallas and Toure). Ferdinand, if riled up, is possibly the best defender in the world along with Gallas and Cannavaro. Carragher? Still some time before he gets to that stage.

The fact remains - Liverpool are inconsistent and need to find consistent form. That’s what the author said, and in face of a consistent Chelsea Liverpool don’t stand a chance. That’s fact.

But let’s not allow facts to come in the way of some bashing, shall we?

  13. I advise most of the commentators who have come before me to check out Sky Sports’ opta investigation of last season, in which it was demonstrated that Liverpool have won more games without gerrard in the team than when he has played. Now, I am expecting a torrent of dogmatic abuse for having dared to sully the name of saint. But this is pure fact.

It is ridiculous to argue against the importance of john terry and frank lampard in the chelsea team. Lampard was the team’s top goalscorer last season and the statistics for the number of goals conceded with terry and gallas in the team are, frankly, frighteningly good.

Before I receive abuse from Liverpool fans, I am a Spurs supporter and prefer Liverpool to Chelsea.

  14. This sure is funny :-) (not the article - I can see what the author meant, but rather the comments). I always had my suspicions regarding the IQ of the average Liverpool supported. These comments seem to confirm that.

None of the comments seem to be related to the points the author is trying to make, but rather the ManU - Chelsea comparison. Strange.

If Scholes is sooo bad (according to some comments) then why is McClaren begging him to re-consider international duty. Especially considering he already has a “selection headache” in that position (Gerrard / Lampard)? Ever thought of that?

  15. Obviously you don’t know what you are talking about.
“can’t see them putting in the solid defensive performances they were known for 2 and 3 years ago”
Didn’t last year team break the record for the most clean sheet in a row and where one clean sheet short of equalling the record for the most clean sheets in a year.

  16. Karl – IQ of Liverpool fans! Or the IQ of you! You’re not even worth the time I spent writing this and will not spend anymore time on you!
Hugo – you have a point regarding terry and Lampard but I would prefer to have a team which you do not rely heavily on certain players as a number of idiots were suggesting over the last few seasons that Liverpool are nothing without Gerrard.
As Jason said Liverpool are building a team when you can have the likes of Carra, stevie on the bench and still produce the goods! It’s early on in the season and already the boys are gelling – yes it’s been a rocky start but were coming together and it’s scary!
All the other comments have said enough!
The editor of this article please, please do not write about Liverpool without doing a year at least of research your comments and your so called facts are absolute rubbish! I have never read such an article that has produced so much of its content on non factual crap.

Bellamy – if he will not score goals for long periods you may be right but you cannot take anything away from the guy if you understand the game he will create many chances for the rest of his team with his intelligent runs!

Pennant – young and spirited. That’s it! Why mention the past?!

Kuyt – but runs hot and cold for Holland?! Did you see ronaldinho at the world cup?! I suppose the jury is still out on him!

    YNWA

HOW MANY MANURE PLAYERS WOULD GET INTO THE CURRENT LIVERPOOL TEAM??? I’ll TELL YOU THE HARD (UNBIASED) FACTS. THREE (yes, 3). ROONEY, RONALDO, FERDINAND. AND IF I WAS THREATENED WITH BUGGERY AT GUNPOINT, MAYBE NEVILLE. THERE WOULD BE SPACES FOR KUYT, GERRARD, ALONSO, SISSOKO, CARRADONA, HYPPIA, RISE and REINA. YOU HAVE 3 WORLD CLASS PLAYERS, THE REST ARE AGEING STARS OR MEDIOCRE. YES KNOW, THE TRUTH HURTS

  18. Whoever you are you need to learn football son, your quote “Until Liverpool produce the Terry’s and Lampard’s of Chelsea and the Ferdinand’s and Scholes of Man U, they will not win the EPL” Have to laugh to include Ferdinand is one of the most overrated clowns i have ever seen. English press overhyping has gone to your head.

  19. What a fountain of knowledge Ahmed Bilal is! He already knows the outcome of the EPL. What a muppet. Do me a favour and get off your high horse. You know nothing but think you do. That makes you even more of a mug than the author. Looking down at us all with your all-knowing eyes.

The author clearly has a poor argument as Liverpool were extremely consistent last season. They’ve blooded new players this season and it takes time for the new guys to settle into Rafa’s system. Once they do Liverpool will be as solid as they were last year. If LFC had beaten Chelski in their corresponding league fixtures last year then they would have finished as champions. How could they possibly be described as inconsistent if it came down to those two games?

As for your comments about Rio Ferdinand - “If riled up, is possibly the best defender in the world” - that shows that you know jack diddly squat about fooball.

In fact - I bet you’re so fat you’ve never even played the game!!

    Tut tut tut

  20. Well, plasticscouser, look at a different view. How many Liverpool players would get into the current Man United team? Two. Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher. That’s all. Heinze is better than any of your left-backs (including even Riise whom I rate very, very highly), Van der Sar is a lot better than Reina and we have Ben Foster. Thank you very much but I’d rather have Saha than Kuyt, Crouch or Bellamy. Comparing Ryan Giggs to any of your wingers would be disgrace so I don’t do it - he’s not in the same world.

Liverpool need a bit of consistency and a more adventurous style. That would suit the likes of Alonso and Gerrard. They often struggle to break down defences which is quite strange given the skills of their central midfielders. Maybe the problem is that their attackers rely too heavily on midfield’s support and do not create enough chances for themselves. But I’m not sure.

  21. Mark Hobbs:

I’d be interested in hearing you refute what I actually said instead of you going on about how i’ve never played the game. If you don’t remember, here it is:

The fact remains - Liverpool are inconsistent and need to find consistent form. That’s what the author said, and in face of a consistent Chelsea Liverpool don’t stand a chance. That’s fact.

Liverpool are inconsistent? Yes or no? Don’t quote last year’s statistics, look at right now. If you don’t like my frame of reference, take the last two years then. If I remember correctly Liverpool came 5th in the league in 2004/2005, or have you forgotten?

If you have Liverpool and Chelsea playing at full strength and on top form, who would come out on top? I’m not a Liverpool or Chelsea fan (and don’t hate either teams) and my view is that Chelsea will edge out because they have the better goal threat and are stronger defensively.

Disagree? Ok, sure enough, your call. We should take a vote on it sometime and ask non-Liverpool and non-Chelsea fans.

  22. “If LFC had beaten Chelski in their corresponding league fixtures last year then they would have finished as champions”

But they lost twice without ever looking likely to get a single point from any of those games. They had two great winning runs that earned them third place. But they had periods when they were useless (in the first four games they scored once I think)

  23. Liverpool V Chelsea this year, if both teams are at the top of their games would likely be home wins for each!

  24. This article is either a ‘fishing’ exercise, designed to generate responses,or a very poor blog. Probably the former.

  25. This ain’t a fishing exercise, just a controversial opinion. Credit goes to you for refraining from calling the site BS.
  26. And Ryan, just for the record. Does being ’solid’ away from home (ie three of first four games last season) after the poor away form from previous year mean useless. Open your eyes boy - Rafa was making the team solid, which is what happened in away games if you look at the stats, so stop talking about ‘periods’ when there were no goals and look at the season as a whole.

Chelski must be one of the luckiest sides ever, in terms of penalties, lucky breaks etc. I mean relying on defenders to make errors is hardly groundbreaking tactics is it!

  27. September 30, 2006plasticscouser

Ok ryan, you are right, with the talent at our disposal, we should be making and scoring more goals. But this is a young, new side with players needing to blood in. Just give rafa time, just like fergie had plenty of. I am really confident that this is not another false new dawn. Unfortuanately our revival has come at a time when some dodgy russian billionare has not just moved the goalposts, but blasted them into orbit. To settle our earlier argument, is there any non lfc/manu fans who would care enough to pick a starting eleven from manu and lfc’s squads. Perhaps this could be an idea for a new topic mr JAFL??

  28. Liam - relying on defenders to make errors isnt a groundbreaking tactic, but being able to capitalise on those mistakes is definitely the mark of a great team.

I’d suggest you revisit the Chelsea v Manchester United match at Stamford Bridge on 29th April 2006. Chelsea won 3-0, and yet it was 3 moments of sheer brilliance that got those 3 goals. Yes, United defenders made mistakes, but very, very few teams in the world could exploit those mistakes like Chelsea did.

Don’t let your memory serve you here, go back and watch that game.

Can you imagine it? A united fan telling you that chelsea beat us fair and square…

  29. plasticscouser - i’m working on that post, and I think you’ll find it pretty fair. watch for it tomorrow morning.

“Until Liverpool produce the Terry’s and Lampard’s of Chelsea and the Ferdinand’s and Scholes of Man U, they will not win the EPL.”

LOL ROFLOL LOL please stop no more no more LOL LOL

  31. “Liverpool are inconsistent? Yes or no? Don’t quote last year’s statistics, look at right now. If you don’t like my frame of reference, take the last two years then.”

You know I typed a whole thing out, about 150 words or more, and then I realised I only had two words for you:

    Momo Sissoko.

  32. momo sissoko = vieira wannabe
    finnan = neville wannabe
    reina = casillas wannabe

the core of liverpool’s squad is made up of ex-championship/bottom table strugglers

    bellamy (blackburn)
    finnan (fulham)
    crouch (southampton)
    pennant (birmingham)
    zenden ROFL (middlesbrough)
    fowler (man city)

villa to battle liverpool for fourth spot this year!

  33. Ahmed Bilal - I would like to know which club you support?

Ryan - I do agree Heinze is a good player, Argentina sure missed him at the WC. I’m sure he’d be just as important to Manu, yeah, once he’s back to form, The league title should be just a breeze… However, I will not take credit away from Manu’s ability to win games even with an almost non-existent midfield, though this season, comparatively with the likes of even Tottyham and Newcastle, on paper, Manu’s midfield does look abit light weight. As for Van der Sar let’s not take credit away from this man, but he’s No better than David Seaman. Reina is just different. I must admit, I use to admire Giggs, and always wished Liverpool would get him playing at Anfield. But, Today’s Giggs is definitely a world of his own, he should stop dreaming and be what he used to be. No? So, I’m Sure Rafa would gladly swap all the players with Fergie to challenge for the EPL title. He’d be absolutely delighted! Maybe we should ask Fergie if he’d like to do so? Then Henry would say he’d like to play for MANU!!!

  34. ROFL….

yeah dude, and for ur kind info chelsea didnt produce lampy and united didnt produce rio..but lfc produced stevie and carra who can skin those two anyways…

keep ur so called footballing knowledge to yerself…

  35. September 30, 2006Hugo Steckelmacher

Sissoko is quite simply NOT a vieira “wannabe”. If anything he is more similar to Makelele. Vieira is very much a box-to-box team, and will be remembered for being responsible for driving teams forward with his powerful runs. He was/is also superb in the air. In all his time at Valencia and Liverpool Sissoko has been confronted with doubters, yet has performed his job diligently and professionally. There are few players in the Premiership who are as good at breaking up the play (albeit through the occasional body-check and subsequent booking) and Liverpool do not look as good a side without him. He also allows Gerrard much more roaming freedom.

  36. September 30, 2006Scandic scouser

For starters: I don´t necessarily believe Pool will bring the PL home this year, but they WILL however finish top three.

Yeah, we ARE to inconsistent at the moment. But we are not alone. Over å LONG season, which side does NOT have its ups and downs? To win, you have to minimize those periods of lesser form.
Last year, Chelseas large squad of quality players, made them come out on top. This year, I think the competition for the title will be even closer.
chelsea has a smaller squad (just as much quality though), and Man U is always up there.
I´m a little surprised, though, as to why they (MU) have let key players leave without replacing them properly.
After all, Michael Carrick is no Roy Keane, and Saha is no van Nistelrooy. I think ManU will pay the price of this lack of reinforcement before long.

If we now take å look at the Liverpool squad, I think it´s undoubtedly strengthened. We have covers on almost every place (maybe except for Finnan), and we have finally got wing players which gives us a wider range of attacking possibilities. Still, I don´t think we will see the full effect of this until next season.

Now, to the comparizon of Terry/Lampard, Ferdinand/Scholes and Carra/Gerrard.
First, all of the above are top quality players, no doubt about it. Anyway, in my opinion Terry is the best defender of these three, and Gerrard is without å doubt the best midfielder.
Simply because he can be used all over the midfield, as a striker, and he has even played right back. He can do things all by himself, and he can make the players around him better with his amazing passes. He is as complete as it´s possible, and I´m absolutely thrilled he´s a Liverpool player! Thank God!
I would never have swapped him with either Lampard or Scholes, not even both of them.

  37. woot
i wanted to explain for u what u dont know
but when i see u write fowler from man city i saied itis not need
for evrey body thinking like stupid writer
when u saied lampard and other players or when u comparing bet. liverpool and other club i saied “thanks god bec i love liverpool and iam from liverpool fans”
liverpool is the team of all time…….
in the past ,in future and in our time.

  38. LIF didnt carra get skinned by a certain former crystal palace striker? rofl.

  39. seems like the author got the last laugh.

  40. :) fantastic article, but you missed a few points out. Liverpool and all the too four could win the league with the right squad and the right management. Liverpool don’t have this at the minute, and may never have it again as they seem content to challenge for cup games rather than the league.

I reckon that Chelsea aren’t hungry enough this season, so Man U will probably win it, through hunger and hard work. Liverpool and Arsenal lack the steel to go with their skills.

  41. Marcus - the point of your rant? :S Ahmed’s a Man United supporter, but JAFL wrote the post!

JAFL: you really shoulda stopped after the first three or four paragraphs man.

Hugo: spot on. I think he’s been in good form so far, and he’s gone about his job very well. Liverpool are definitely a much better team with him than without.

  42. lol redsawi are you indian.

  43. Liverpool-wont-win-premiership because they’re simply not good enough. Like it or not there are better equipped squads and better equipped football philosophies being played in the EPL and that’s why they won’t win.

  44. Oh Dear Hsan….I wasn’t going at JAFL or Ahmed, it was RYAN I was after…

  45. benitez should search for a young defense in the liverpool academy. he must rotate his team and also the goalkeeper.

  46. Just thought I’d add a comment to highlight the stupidity of all the ejits who thought they were really clever writing responses like : “Why Man Utd will not win the Premier League, again!!”

    In your face.
